Safety School

Is there anyone here who is attending their safety school that can comment on how their life at the school has been affected by them being in the top 25% of the class?

I’m presently at my safety to school to my safety school (for financial reasons).

I’m transferring, and as of fall of 2009 will be somewhere else.

I highly dislike it here. The classes aren’t a challenge, at all, most students aren’t motivated, etc. Even the professors can’t stop talking about how much they want it to be the weekend so they can drink. Some even get drunk with students.

I can’t wait to leave, if given the opportunity to decide colleges again I would have taken out extra loans for a better school. Feel as if my time was wasted.

lmao, what college is that?

Well I left Caltech last year for medical reasons and went to my state school for a semester. It was kind of silly.

I had to work. Not that hard, I was pretty much free every night after 6 pm. But it still takes effort to understand quantum mechanics no matter where you go to school. It wasn’t so bad because whenever I didn’t understand something, no one else in the class did either. My classmates had pretty bad math skills. A lot of them just used the formulas without really understanding stuff or having any intuition whatsoever. For instance they wouldn’t know why the projection of (3, 2, 4) onto the x-y plane is (3, 2, 0). We did stuff slowly and didn’t cover very much. My graduate-level analysis class reminded me of freshman math at Caltech except my classmates were dumber and married. In quantum mechanics we only covered free particles, harmonic oscillators, and the hydrogen atom.

Aside from that, my classes were wonderful and most of my professors explained things very well. I took upper-division and graduate classes (you would too if you went to your safety school and passed out of everything) so most of my classes had like six people in them. Which was good for someone like me because I really like asking questions in class. The professors were very, very nice to me when they discovered I was a freshman. The students were friendly too, but I didn’t form real bonds with anyone. Most of the kids in my classes were much older than me.

I did have a good time. But I’m glad to be out of there.

God forbid…

Anyway, I transferred to my safety, and I’m much happier here.

well hey, they were senior physics majors

Well, I was in the top 15% of my entering class (honors program). My school was not my safety, but not a reach either. I guess it could have been a match, but I never imagined myself coming here in the first place. Basically, I didn’t feel like studying much because I didn’t want to be here. And now I’m kicked out of the honors program and just like everyone else. Though, in my defense, my GPA was always respectable–the honors program just had very high requirements. I’m currently very annoyed because my grades actually meet the honors requirements, except I can’t get back into the program anymore! Moral of the story: don’t slack off and end up as a mediocre or even average student at your safety/match. This happened to several of my friends as well.

What college did you go to, fizix?

i went to florida atlantic university, you probably haven’t heard of it

I’m at my safety school and honestly, I’m happy I ended up here instead of somewhere else. Being in honors here comes with various perks. All in all, it worked out extremely well for me.

I’ve heard of FAU. I was thinking you went to a flagship somewhere, but this makes more sense.

lol to dion’s comment, exactly what i was thinking :p

the plus side to going to your safety is you’ll most likely be at the top of your class :)

FAU has D-I football. Of course we’ve heard of it. Chillin’ in Boca with retired Jewish grandmas on deck!

Boca’s more Jewish families than retired grandmas.

Are they in the Sunbelt? That conference should be kicked out of FBS.
