Safety Schools in the South?

Hey im in a little bit of a dilemma. Im a Senior, and I am waitlisted on my top schools list, and the backup school I got into (High Point U) isnt really where I wanna go, but ill be okay there if it comes to that. Can you guys recommend some schools that I can easily get into this late in the SC, GA, NC area that arent that bad?

Thanks

why dont you just apply for spring semester? youll have a lot more options this way…

kyle, wont that decrease my chances, and what does that mean to colleges? And im really not sure that if I take a semester off that I will want to go back to school. Would it be better for me to go to a college and transfer than to wait?

i took a semester off and just got a fulltime job, made me want to go to school more. applied to uconn and lsu for spring semester and got into both. i think you could get into kentucky or tennessee (i did, 3.3 25) for spring semester if you wanted to. i dont think colleges will accept apps this late, and i dont think it hurts your chances, i think it helped me with getting into uconn…

On May 5th, go to www.nacacnet.org for a list of schools which have openings for fall, 2006.

Ow wow, thanks firefly! Do schools have to post their openings on there if they have any?

No, it’s a voluntary list, but many do participate. There will probably be several that would meet your needs.

I’m pretty sure Kennesaw State still takes applications. They have pretty decent dorms (most freshman are suite style with own bedroom and bathroom) and many of my friends are happy there.

Jijboi–There are a number of schools still accepting applications–I don’t know what your preferences are as to location (urban, rural etc.), whether you’re male or female, what your monetary situation is or whether you mind a school with a religious affiliation, but here are some reasonably good schools that I believe are still accepting applications:

South Carolina

Claflin University
Presbyterian College
Winthrop University

North Carolina

University of North Carolina–Charlotte (seems like a pretty high percentage of students commute)
Campbell University
Meredith College (all female)

Georgia

Agnes Scott (all female school accepting aps until Monday–maybe they’d give you an extra few days to get in recommendations etc.)
Berry College
Covenant College
Mercer University

If you’re willing to consider Florida, there are some very good schools in Florida that I believe still are accepting applications as follows:

University of Tampa
Eckerd College
Stetson College
Florida A& M (May 10th deadline)

Also, Hendrix in Arkansas is still accepting aps. Your SAT scores are low for Hendrix, but it’s an excellent school and you never know what might happen if you apply.

Good luck

A little off topic, but is the school I got into (High Point University) any good? I heard that Nido Queibin (the new president) is trying to increaase the schools reputation and hes done a lot so far with the millions hes raising to improve the campus.

Definitely try GSU as well.

High Point is highly ranked in Comprehensive Bachelor’s - South in USNWR. The school isn’t too well known outside the area, but I think Queibin will make an enormous difference. He has contacts and drive and vision.

Here’s the link to last year’s NACAC Space Availability List, so you can play around with it before this year’s list becomes available.

Thought I would give those of you who helped me out an update:

I got in to WINTHROP!!!

Im soo excited right now since I really didnt want to go to High Point and im glad I got into a great school thats affordable too.

Jijboi–Many congratulations. I’m really impressed that you sent in a new application so quickly and got positive results. If you plan to attend Winthrop, have a great time and if you’re still waiting to hear from other schools, good luck!
