<p>How safe is the campus???
What kind of safety issues do they have???</p>

<p>In the new Readers Digest survey, Northeastern was the 2nd safest college.</p>

<p>We were at a recent open house, and they were touting the fact that a Reader’s Digest survey had rated Northeastern #2 in the country for safety. The survey was voluntary and didn’t really examine crime, only preparedness.</p>

<p>One survey of actual crime statistics on the same site rated NEU as “moderate.” You can download a spreadsheet that shows the number of crimes broken down into a lot of different categories:</p>

<p>Anyone that has spent some time around NEU and the campus can vouch for the fact that the police presence is very very strong. Both Boston City police and Northeastern University police patrol the area day and night. Of course there are areas that should be avoided, just like in any big city. And the students are made very aware of what those areas are during their orientation.</p>

<p>I have first hand knowledge of an incident that occurred last semester and I was very very impressed with the way it was expeditiously handled.</p>

<p>Currently, I’m debating between several schools, and that is the biggest standout about northeastern: it was secure, it had safes in many buildings, and it had receptionists for dorms. There was a very low crime rate and a very low theft rate.</p>

<p>Safety may be the kingpin argument that makes northeastern truly better than tufts, in my opinion. The police presence was very, very evident (I agree with everything said by RatedPG in the last post) and I felt more secure there than most other schools I’ve seen.</p>

<p>Like any urban campus, NEU is as safe as you make it. If students pay attention to stay out of certain areas at night, to have someone with them in the evening, and to take very basic safety precautions it is fairly safe.
There is a strong police presence. Many of the dorms have receptionsists who require ID (even of parents) to enter and leave the dorm: a student who lives in that dorm must come down and sign the guest in each time the guest enters the building.</p>

<p>“Just off campus” is a bit of a stretch. I live in Mission Hill, and I have a 20 minute walk from my house to campus. The neighborhood has always had a bit of a reputation and the students who live here understand that. If safety is a concern, it’s very easy to stay on-campus, where safety isn’t ever an issue.</p>

<p>Yea Im from Boston and Northeastern is around some of Boston’s noturious projects and “hoods”. However if you stay on campus or on the other side, you will be 150% safe.</p>

<p>I heard they give a speech at orientation about where students (at least freshmen from out of town) probably shouldn’t go, especially not alone. And the campus has those blue light phone things everywhere.</p>

<p>Campus is perfectly safe, perfectly safe. Areas that aren’t [Mission Hill, Back Bay Fens (after dark), etc.] are fairly easy to avoid.</p>

<p>i visited boston for the first time recently… it appears incrediblyy safer than other cities i have been to (philadelphia, new york, la…), but that’s just my opinion. of course, you should always avoid being alone in the dark, etc., but it definitely seems safe.</p>
