I’m looking for saftey schools in a warm climate - preferably a suburban, large university (10,000+) with D1 sports. I’m only going to be a junior next year, but am going to go on some college visits this summer to get a feel for some colleges. Here are my stats:

UW GPA: 3.75
School hasn’t told me my weighted, but I’ve taken mostly honors courses and I plan to take 5 or 6 AP classes in the next two years.

Ranked 8/190

PSAT: 190

Good (but not great!) ecs: 2 varsity sports, president of Spanish club next year, member of peer leaders, 200 volunteer hours…

If anyone has any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Take a look at LSU. Meets your requirements. With a 1330 SAT (M & CR) or a 30 ACT along with your GPA and you qualify for full tuition scholarship. A 1170 SAT or 26+ ACT and they will waive OOS tuition. My daughter applied as her safety. After being accepted at 7 other schools, she visited LSU, loved it, and will be attending in the Fall.

I see that you’re a rising junior. I cannot stress this enough, but take the PSAT very seriously. I believe this test is the most important test you can take because if you become a national merit finalist, you will get a ton of offers from many schools to go there for free. Many schools have special scholarships for finalists that pay for tuition, room, board, and some extra money. This worked wonders for me and I’m nt paying a dime for college throughout the entire 4 years (not trying to brag but give a personal anecdote).

Anyway, to answer your question, most schools in the SEC and ACC would fit your description.

Unfortunately, you live in MA with its huge numbers of smart students, so your PSAT would have to shoot up in order for you to make even Commended status. It’s easier to be recognized if you live in a state that’s not famous for its brilliant students.

Be sure to prepare for the test this summer and see if you can pull that 190 up. You should be able to find (online or call) the cutoff number from MA for this past year, and use that as a minimum you’re shooting for. The previous poster is right about the money that’s available to Finalists, so it’s worth your time and effort to get that score as high as you can. GOOD LUCK!!!

Look into Wake Forest in NC. It’s private, beautiful, and offers an excellent education.
I’ve never been to Elon, but have heard nice things about it. There are lots of great schools out there and if you know what you want, you will find them. To help you with that, see if your high school counselors have a copy of Ruggs Recommendations on the Colleges and look up which schools are suggested for the areas of study that interest you. Then check out those colleges to see which ones appeal to you.

Bottom line: use this summer to study for that PSAT and investigate colleges that offer what you want. Once school starts, you might not have the time to do this, so take advantage of summer! Good Luck!!!
