SAGE scholars tuition program

Does anyone have experience with the Sage scholars tuition rewards program?

I’m wondering why some colleges participate in it and others do not. I wonder if there is a downside for the college. My son’s college doesn’t currently participate in this program.

There is no downside to participating. There is no cost to the student, and the money can build up fast. The worst that happens is that the sage rewards end up being money that would have been awarded anyway through merit or need.

Generally, the colleges that are more in need of students participate, but more are added every year. Highly selective private colleges do not feel a need to participate, and public colleges are not allowed to participate.

My son went to a college that did not participate. That worked out fine - because I could transfer his rewards to my daughter, who probably will attend a participating college.

The main restriction is that you need to file a sage form with each college at the time you apply. I guess there is a slight risk that it could hurt you in the admissions process if you have too much of a discount vs. another competing applicant is full pay. However, most of these participating colleges discount tuition anyway for good students, and most are not that hard in admissions.
