Salary negotiation for part time internship with start up?

They already told D they’d love to have her but they don’t have a lot of money. She said she could work 10-15 hours/week this summer. They asked her what her rate per hour would be.

Last summer, she had a paid internship (or more accurately, an internship with a set stipend) but her supervisor only asked her to come in 2-3 times a week for 3-4 hours per day. Based on her actual hours worked, she earned over $50/hour. But that would be way too high to ask of this start up and it’s more because her supervisor didn’t need her that much.

She will have lots of responsibility (it’s an ecommerce retailer; her task would be marketing and improving brand awareness through social media) which will look good on her resume.

No matter what she says, if they don’t want to pay it, they won’t, and they’ll counteroffer. She asked me what she should ask for in the initial negotiation phase. I don’t know what interns get paid per hour. She had a friend who had an IB internship and got $3000 for the summer, but he also worked 100 hours/week.

Any info much appreciated.

Her college career office will likely know exactly what other similar roles are paying. If you ask us- you’ll get a bunch of random responses which will not correlate with reality in any meaningful sense.

Aah…good idea. Didn’t think of that. Thanks
