Sam Houston State University Reputation

I considered putting this in my thread about online history graduate programs, but I feel this is a different topic, so forgive yet another thread about this topic.

I’ve pretty much dismissed the online-only Master’s route for History, but I still like the online option that a couple of brick and mortar schools offer. The two I see mentioned most frequently are Austin Peay University and Sam Houston State University.

SHSU especially doesn’t seem to have any discussion since 2004. That’s the latest discussion I can find about their reputation. The few comments I saw (all from one site and there were only 4 comments) seemed to say “Avoid SHSU for history graduate program.” Apparently the program is not very rigorous and the education quality is pretty low. That was 2004. Does this still hold true?

Between Austin Peay and SHSU, which history department is stronger? Does anyone know the strengths and weaknesses of each?

I haven’t even heard of these schools.

Dan Rather got his journalism degree from Sam Houston State University and Congressman Charlie Wilson went there as well. So they have some respectable people who were alum, at least for undergrad. Marcus Luttrell (the author of Lone Survivor) also went there.
