same law/med school for couples?

this isn’t really specifically about pre-med topics, but I was wondering if anyone on cc who has wanted to continue a high school/college relationship into medical school.
my partner and I are shooting to go to the same med/law school (same year). he is a URM with excellent GPA and LSAT (from the practice tests he’s taken), and while my GPA and MCAT should also be perfectly fine, I am worried that I won’t be able to match his school list.

anyone with similar experiences? thank you!

I know a several couples who have done similar things. One couple was a law/med combo - she in law, he in med. The biggest issue is that the schools were 50 miles apart. They were engaged before entering grad school and decided to live where her law school was for the first two years (since med school lectures are less required than law school lectures was their reasoning), and now that we’ve started third year, they moved to our city where the med school is since it’s much more (orders of magnitude more really) intense as a third year med student than a 3L.

Two other couples have done the same thing for med/dental - exact same problem with the dental school being 50 miles away. I’m not as close to them as the other couple, so I can’t speak to how they handle it.

The biggest thing I think is realizing that one or both of you might have to settle for schools you’re less than thrilled about for the relationship. Either that or you’re going to have to do the long distance thing. For some people that’s not a huge issue, for others it’s an impossible issue.

One other consideration is to look for cities that many medical schools and law schools - Chicago, Boston, LA and NYC certainly fit this bill.

There are certainly other places like St. Louis and Omaha NE (2 med schools, 1 law school) that fit the bill, but a big issue is that a lot of state schools have their medical campus one place and their law campus some place else - Kansas for example has the med school in Kansas City, while the law school is in Lawrence - about 40 miles away.

i have a good friend who’s going through this now, she’s applying to med school, he to law. The challenge in this situation has largely been that she is the more qualified applicant, but it is more important that one goes to a high powered law school than a high powered research med school in terms of its effects on one’s career. He was recently accepted to Chicago law and she should hear back from their med school regarding a final decision next week, so hopefully they’ll be done after that.

their strategy was to apply primarily to common geographic locations, nyc, chicago, boston, dc, philly, that had a lot of med and law schools and their schools would end up being at worst about an hour away from one another.

also keep in mind that in many cases the law and med school are not necessarily the same degree of selectivity (i.e. georgetown law is generally considered much more prestigious than their med schools, but yale law moreso than yale med); law schools outside of the top 3 or so are also much easier to get into than med schools
