SAMS at Carnegie Mellon 2019-2020 Discussion

@mkat2003 You have very good Stats. Chance for Sophomore is lower. When did you get your decision?

Hey guys- did anybody apply only to SAMS in the CMU pre-college program? If so, the scholarship consideration wouldn’t apply right? because SAMS is already free? So should I just not check it?

@highlighters Concepts is not like Calc. It is completely different. It isn’t hard just time consuming. Here is a description from CMU: This course introduces the basic concepts, ideas, and tools involved in doing mathematics. As such, its main focus is on presenting informal logic, and the methods of mathematical proof. These subjects are closely related to the application of mathematics in many areas, particularly computer science. Topics discussed include a basic introduction to elementary number theory, induction, the algebra of sets, equivalence relations, congruences, recurrence equations, and graph theory.

I haven’t received the email with the link to the group chat
Can someone send it to me, my email is juandavidflorezrincon01@gmail.com

@coconutfloat I clicked it regardelss just to be 100% sure

If you are rejected, will they send an email telling you, because it’s been 3 weeks for me but I still haven’t recieved anything. Will I know if I’m rejected or will they only tell those who are accepted?

I am wondering the same, applied on 01/12 and second LOR was submitted on 01/20. No response yet.

I submitted my SAMS app on 2/6. Not expecting any decision anytime soon, but I’m pretty nervous cause I submitted rather late. I also applied to NHSGA and the Summer Session, so I’m worried that’ll count against me. My stats aren’t that good.

Yeah, does anyone know how fast they fill the program? Because I figured I had until at least the end of February, I hadn’t been pushing myself to send it in. Looking here makes me think that I should’ve already submitted…

@seabathchun Hoping it doesn’t fill too fast. I didn’t apply early enough, I fear.

My GPA is quite low (4.04 at my old school, 3.4 here) but with my school being super rigorous I hope that’ll not hurt me too much. My SAT is 1420, 1340 PSAT. Couple of tech ECs. I’m a $40k income white LGBT student with an incarcerated mother, so hoping it all works out.

I’ve attended public school up until this year, but since my school is so notably rich I’m assuming that’s a (rightful) disadvantage for my application.

it’s rolling admission so it most likely won’t fill up before the final deadline however it’s gonna harder to get accepted as time goes on. Just make sure that the content of your essays is really good and shows the admissions board who you really are. SAMS is a program that’s meant to provide support to those who have a passion for learning and STEM so show that passion in your essays and if your stats are low maybe explain why in your essays. Hopefully you’ll get in !!!

If you are rejected, they will send an email telling you that you are rejected

@BoundtoSucceed yes. the link did not show up at first. I had to email the administrator and she added it.

Just got my decision…
wAiTLiSted lmaooo(i think i’m one of the first applicants who got that fat waitlist)
submitted Jan 17
STATS: Asian Female rising senior
1510 SAT+800 Math2+790 Physics
4.0 UW, 4.3 W
Decent ECs but not a lot of rewards
i think i messed up my essay that’s why

hey has anyone gotten accepted before that submitted kinda late? My cousin is applying but she’s going through a lot right now and hasn’t submitted it yet… is she going to have a chance at this rate?

I am a 2019 SAMS alum. If any of you have any questions, fire away.

I got rejected (White female 35 ACT, 4.5W 4.0UW). I did get a full scholarship to the Summer Session though!

How long should I expect to wait for a decision? I’m biting my nails!

@astudent03
Omg! congrats! Did you get financial aid (need-based) or a merit-based scholarship for the summer session? I only chose the option to apply to SAMS and not the others, because my family is middle income (so we probably wouldn’t get need-based aid).

hey does anyone know if the program is filled yet?
