San Antonio Travel Tips

Leaving Ohio for a trip to San Antonio combining business and pleasure. Taking my almost 13 daughter with me and my 75 year old mom (don’t worry - she’s a traveler and a walker!).

We are staying at the Marriott Rivercentre. I am aware of the Riverwalk - can’t wait to see it!

Looking for other tips on what to see, what not to bother to see (the Alamo?) Simple, not too expensive restaurants that are not chain type, fun shops or other entertainment for a trio ranging in age from 13 to 75!

Love the Riverwalk…there’s lots of places to eat there!

Alamo is fine to see!

Favorite restaurant on the Riverwalk - Budro’s. Get the guacamole that they make tableside.

Favorite place to shop - El Mercado (Market Square)

If your daughter likes zoos, San Antonio has a neat little one with an amazing aviary section for a zoo its size. It’s about ten minutes north of downtown, really close to Trinity University. It’s never too early to look, since you are down there anyhow. Small, pretty campus. I have an admitted bias.

The Alamo is not nearly as cheezy as it used to be, I’d rate it as a must-see if you are staying on the River-walk. Plus (unless things have changed in the last few years) it’s free and right across the street. And since this is CC, drive up to Trinity University and walk around the beautiful campus…

Cracks me up - I am SO in the mode, I probably would get excited to visit campuses around there!!!

We won’t have a car so I’m sure we will be staying close - walking distance, or I think there is some downtown trolley type thing - to the hotel.

I was there last year, and D went last week.
Gotta see the Alamo! It’s free, so you might as well. (btw, there is no basement. . .)
Trolley is fine and easy.

Argh! Post got eaten!

Eat at Mi Tierra in El Mercado: [Mi Tierra Restaurant & Bakery](http://www.mitierracafe.com/) It’s an institution

Love the Witte Museum: [Welcome To The Witte Museum](http://www.wittemuseum.org/) Not sure about transportation.

Eat in the revolving restaurant! [Hemisphere Park - Visiting San Antonio’s HemisFair Park](http://gotexas.about.com/od/attra6/a/HemisFairPrk.htm)

If you want to really learn about our fair state: [The Institute of Texan Cultures Home Page](http://www.texancultures.utsa.edu/)

Yes, I’d choose Mi Tierra over any of the Mexican restaurants on the riverwalk. Gotta see the Alamo.

Also, it’s fun to eat at Schilo’s Delicatessen.

How about the distance between the airport and the hotel? I’m thinking to do a cab rather than shuttle since there are 3 of us - cheaper? The shuttle is $18 a person.

How far is Sea World? Don’t know if it would be a priority but D has never been and I thought it could be a possibility.

I really appreciate the restaurant suggestions!

The NYT just did a "36 Hours in . . . " about San Antonio-- [Weekend in San Antonio - NYTimes.com](http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/04/04/travel/04hours.html?scp=1&sq=36%20hours%20in%20San%20Antonio&st=cse)

abasket,

Not sure of the exact dates of your visit, but April 15-25 is Fiesta, a celebration that encompasses the entire city. Don’t know how to post a link, but if you Google it you will find tons of info.

Arriving there tomorrow, April 9 - returning April 13. But thanks anyway!
