So I guess Fred Phelps decided reading comic books equals . . . IDOLATRY. He packed up his crazy church and headed down to the San Diego Comic Con to protest it.

But the nerds and geeks of the 125,000 strong event were not going to take this lying down. They launched a counter protest across the street with signs of their own.

Signs like: “Superman died for your sins.”

And “God hates kittens.”

“All glory to the Hypno-Toad.”

And, my personal favorite, “How the #*$@ do magnets work?”

Thanks for the smile. Phelps came to my kids former high school to protest that the school did Rent. The community came out in support of the students. It looks like Phelps is trying for more publicity and realized a lot of people attend Comic Con. What a nut.

In my naivete, I used to think that conservative Christians supported the execrable Phelps and his “church,” which is actually mostly his extended family. It took me a while to realize he is disliked equally by right and left.

I live in his hometown. My kids have gone to school with his grandkids. He will go anywhere where he can get an audience.

I was in a minor traffic jam one day and thought I’d be nice and allow a van to get in front of me. To my horror I realized the van was full of Phelps with their picket signs.
However, if I had it to do over again, I would let them in again. I’m not going to let their gospel of hate overcome a gospel of love.
