Any english majors accepted?

Portal was updated Monday, March 11. Email came today.

We’re in the same boat. My D24 was accepted at UC Irvine, SLO, and Northeastern, but no word from SDSU.

It’s still baffling that the CSU trustees concluded that relying almost entirely on an applicant’s GPA during a period of unprecedented grade inflation was the best path to achieve institutional priorities at the various CSU campuses.

Standardized testing? Of course not!
Essays? Nah.
Extracurriculars? What are those?
Letters of Recommendation? Pass!
Just GPA. Yeah, only that.

Beyond this narrow focus in the admissions model, the awkward manner in which admissions decisions have been trickling out since December also seems par for the course. Hopefully everyone awaiting a decision has a school or schools that they love already in their corner!

SDSU admission factors posted by an AO last year:
MULTI-FACTORED ADMISSION: As an impacted campus, admission is based on many factors. Weighted CSU GPA is the largest factor, but we also consider amount of A-G courses above and beyond the minimum, preparation towards intended major (courses and GPA), HS course rigor, first-generation, and local status.

If you are unhappy about the process, do not apply and find schools that take into consideration what you find best reflects the students accomplishments.

This supports what I believe about CSU admissions. Feels like a gpa/rigor lottery. Nothing wrong with that, just was unaware at the start of this process. Seems a bit inconsistent and sporadic. But if it works for them, so be it.

Here is a chart of the Supplemental factors taken into consideration for admission by all the CSU campuses. The CSU admission factors are mainly stats based but not all and have been since the beginning.

Is the multi factor admission only used by impacted campus and majors?

On the top of the chart, it states some criteria may only be used for impacted or STEM majors. If you want specifics, you can look it up here by campus: https://www.calstate.edu/apply/freshman/Pages/first-time-freshman-supplemental-factors-by-campus.aspx

What concerns me is the average GPAs for impacted CSUs and UCs in general, is I’m worried they are SO inundated with applications they don’t take the time to consider the school profile–some schools don’t offer all those APs to get a 4.5. My kid’s school offered 1 AP in each 10th & 11th (4 in Senior year which they don’t count). I know they say they do but…how can they with 150,000 applications?

Senior year courses are considered for rigor but yes not considered in the CSU GPA calculation. No one can know the specifics on their decision making unless you work in admissions.

Maximum capped weighted CSU GPA is 4.4 so anyone posting a 4.5 or higher is either using a fully weighted GPA or rounding up.

That said after 13 years of following CSU admissions and trying to help applicants/parents on this site, much about the process is still a mystery. How much of a bump do local in-service area students get? How much of an impact is being First generation?

Some CSU’s spell it out on their website, but most do not. All I can tell you is that since CSU’s admit by major, major selection has a very large impact on an applicant’s chances.

Has anything come out today? do we think there will be more acceptances coming out

My opinion is that more will come out tomorrow. This is based on my non-scientific comparison of the number of posts on this page compared to other pages where there was a big wave already, like Cal Poly SLO (there are over 1,000 posts there). Since there are just over 400 here, I think more will come out.
Maybe that is wishful thinking but…

I have the same logic. SDSU is a bigger school, so one would expect as many if not more posts. But of course, much like yourself, I have a vested interest in this theory. We’ve struck out with CSULB, USD, UCI, and apparently SLO, so it will be really crushing if SDSU also comes in with a no.

I’m an alum - in my eyes, the process is embarrassingly shallow, regardless what the purported AO stated last year. Nobody I’ve spoken with believes that anything other than GPA and demographical information is considered meaningfully at this point.

Specifically, how can academic rigor be accurately considered when the CSU model caps the weighted GPA calculation? Minimum academic rigor is not academic rigor. Ultimately, there’s very little evidence (none?) that the CSU system is relying on anything other than grade inflated GPAs and DEI factors to meet institutional priorities.

I hope you are correct about more to come. We are in a similar boat.
