IMO, the parent complaints about the dorms are overblown. Lots of helicoptering, trying to make sure their kid has the perfect, Ritz-Carlton experience.

Lots of class options.
Unique food options (restaurants and market versus dorm dining hall.)
Good sports teams.
Good public transit around San Diego.
Lots of Study-Abroad opportunities.
