My daughter spoke to a friend who just started SF State, she impression was that her freshman classes were “easy”, she has had very little work since school started. Is this usual for SF State or do they give freshman a chance to ease into the college life and then start piling on the work? Or, are the classes generally not that work-laden or less than one would have expected?

It depends on which classes. Most schools have easy classes and hard classes.

Also, many freshmen, afraid of how difficult the transition to university courses and life could be, choose classes which repeat their AP credit (even if they got a 5 score).
