Perhaps your daughter would find good choices on the bargain list published by the Chronicle each year. As they say…“Our best bets for dining on the cheap in the Bay Area, broken down into categories from bar food to ramen to taquerias and beyond.”

We’ve never had a hard time just happening upon a good place to eat there, but if you are wanting a known quantity, check out the restaurants reviewed here (or watch on PBS- Check Please, Bay Area). We’ve found some great places through this (Burma Superstar, Cafe Tiramisu) at all different price points. [Check, Please! Bon apetit!

oh—Burma Superstar—a winner! It’s in Inner Richmond…

also, Park Chow…always had reallllly good food here, and quite reasonable

I am making a list. We have reservations at one of the recommendations for one night of our visit. I am struggling with where to go on a Saturday night. One of the diners will have worked a 10 hour day. I don’t know how tired she will be. My first thought is to try to go somewhere fairly easy to get to from where they live. Ideas for either Russian Hill, Cow Hollow? I considered Mamacita but they don’t have a reservation till 9:30 available. Since Saturday is going to be busy wherever we end up I would like someplace that takes reservations.

Bumping this way up.
Many thanks to so many good suggestions. We have tried quite a few of them.
Headed up for another quick trip. Any opinions on A16?
My D also wants to try Kabob and Hayes.

A16 just made the SF Chronicle’s Top 100 Bay Area restaurants…

Gosmom- thank you for the link. This visit we are going to try Mamacita. Will save A16 for another trip. I figure if my D lives up there another year or so and we visit 4 or 5 times a year we never have to eat at the same place twice. Opposite of the way we dine out at home where we always go to the same two or three places.
