No not looking at colleges- but I will be in town in April for a few nights owing to my purchase of a non refundable- non transferable ticket to see Eddie Vedder perform at the Arlington theatre
( its a movie theatre? how is that gonna work? godIhope the sound is good- I am so spoiled/picky)
anyway- the SB show was the only one that worked on the website for me.

Would that be insane to drive down from Seattle by myself in a timely fashion?
( the most I would drive would be 8 or nine hours at a time- ive done that before- but I didn’t like it)

Someone who lives in Orange county has offered to put me up- but that sounds a ways away?

anyway- it will work out with my school schedule- and my H will probably have a cow- but he already " refused" to allow me to attend a local benefit concert- that I already had tickets for- because it was in a “nightclub”
He * said* that a concert in a more formal venue was * different*
well- we’ll see.
Its not my fault Eddie hasn’t scheduled a Seattle date ( yet)
but hey road trip!

whats the weather like in Santa Barbara? I haven’t been there since I was 12- which needless to say was * a long, time, ago*- two of my great aunts lived there-

& we were visiting them on a trip down the coast- the biggest trip I have ever taken with my family- driving down to Corvallis- & going camping on the ocean with one of my dads friends who was in grad school at OSU- touring the Sealion caves- big redwoods- staying with another friend of my dads who was a chem prof at Univ of San Francisco then finally making it to LA & Disneyland ( I think the Pirates of the Caribbean ride & the Haunted House ride had just opened)
I liked Knotts Berry farm better.
We also made it to the San diego zoo- but I have no idea how we got home-
Good thing we had a microbus so everyone ( the three kids) could have their own seat- ( my brother sat in the luggage compartment- I don’t know where our stuff went- I do remember the best shopping expedition of my life however in Santa Barbara- compliment of my aunt who apparently couldn’t stand my clothing and wanted to get me something more fashionable.)
I loved it- faux leather skirt & matching vest- lots of mini skirts- nothing like the " pre-teen" clothes in Seattle :p

It’s a long drive from Seattle to Santa Barbara - figure 2 days unless you like really long drives. It’s easy to make it there without getting lost but it’s a long drive and it’s even longer if you end up having to drive it in rain much of the way and there’s a fair chance of that this time of year.

Just guessing, but driving is probably faster than the train but you can’t take a nap, read a book, or play on your laptop while you’re driving - at least it’s not a good idea. Flying is quickest assuming there are decent connections (assuming no non-stops but I haven’t checked).

The weather in SB is normally pretty nice. They get more rain than we in San Diego do but nothing like Seattle!

Oh - and Orange County is quite a ways south of SB (hours).

I don’t know if you noticed, but there is (inexplicably) a non-stop flight between Santa Barbara and Seattle once a day. (My UCSB son’s girlfriend is at Udub.) And if you drove the gas cost would be close to the airfare. I love traveling by train, but unless the journey is the destination for you, I’d fly.

Orange County is at least 3 hours from Santa Barbara by car almost any time of day, due to traffic.

kluge is right - there’s a nonstop Alaska/Horizon Airlines flight that’s about 2.5 hours.

If you decide to drive, it’s about 592 miles from Seattle to Redding (9+ hours) and about 534 miles from Redding to SB (8+ hours). Factor in gas, at least 2 extra hotel nights, extra restaurants, etc. and you could easily be above the price of an airline ticket.

If you go, try to visit Solvang, and the Santa Ynez valley. it is some of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. Thre is a Marriott hotel in Buelton, which is kind of the gateway to the Santa Ynez valley…much cheaper than similar accomodations in Santa Barbara, and away from the crowds. I love it there. Gosh, I want a weekend getaway!

Fly down, rent a car, buy the plants, and have the nursery ship them.

It’s a long drive. And Orange County is three hours away.

As for weather, it may be foggy in the morning but the rest of the day will be warm and dry (think hot Seattle August day).

(I just got a note from my nephew who lives in Santa Barbara—made me want to head right there. It’s a wonderful small city. But VERY expensive!)

If you have a chance, the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum is small, but very nicely done. The town has a ton of great shops, architecture (the courthouse, mission, downtown shops), nurseries, etc.

A gift suggestion for your friend in Orange county: a map of California with estimated travel times in it.

EK,
The Arlington hosts lots of concerts. The sound will be fine, not to worry. Orange county is way too far away. If you fly, you can cab it to downtown Santa Barbara and it won’t be too expensive… but hotels will be pricey even on a Thursday night. You could also rent a car as suggested…that would allow you to stay outside SB and it would be cheaper.
Depends on how comfortable you are with driving around at night…
If you give me an idea of budget I can post some hotel suggestions…would you just be in town for the one night?

EK4, time to hang up the road tripping unless you have at least a week. It’s a long haul I have done several times. Fly and ship. SB can be cold and foggy. Or warm. Depends on the winds.
