That is super cool!! That would be hard to turn down if she got it!!
Youāre telling me. Sheās feeling the potential pull too. We shall seeā¦
That is really odd, especially being Catholic! Was he accepted EDII or RD? Usually the Catholics not only get accepted EA, they get the scholarships as incentive too!
I find the replies about yield protection interesting; maybe they started protecting their yield recently because when my son was accepted in 2021-22 to attend Fall 2022, it was the year where they had 1000 GPAs of 4.0 and they did not yield protect (it was after COVID so the top students were applying everywhere). Straight from an admissionās rep, he said they āhadā to offer those EA spots to them even though they knew they were their default school. I was wondering why our EA was deferred and he looked at my sonās application and said he would have accepted him, it was an oversight on our admission advisor but assured us that my son would be accepted either RD or EDII. So Iām glad to read that they are doing yield protection now. But still, I would think your sonās application with the sports and Catholic should have gotten him in EA. My son had an admissions advisor whose bio explicitly noted that she was looking for Latinx, another reason he may have gotten deferred.
My son is at SCU now and really enjoys it. He is in a frat and on a club team so he has his connections. Perhaps itās that there are things to do within reach of the campus, such as two huge, great malls a 10-minute drive from campus or tons of restaurants on El Camino (a 10-minute drive) or people use Zip Cars to leave campus. If there are no activities going on at the campus, then people are just busy doing whatever in their dorms or off campus? Maybe you are more familiar with huge, public schools where there are people everywhere, all the time? We live 20 minutes from campus but my son stays on campus during the weekends, itās not a commuter school, thus their mandatory 2-year dorm stay and no parking passes for freshmen. When I drop off my sonās laundry, I see the students and can say that what we like about them is that in general, they are both socially well-adjusted and book smart. SCU is Jesuit so they want well-rounded students.
Oh gosh, we were in that wild ride too! Ivy Leaguers were applying everywhere due to uncertainty and it was the first time SCU received so many 4.0 GPAs, they said they received 1000 so they gave all their EAs to them even though they knew they were their default. So my son got deferred, when in a regular year, the would have gotten admitted EA. So he EDII since SCU was his top choice. Didnāt want to take the chance and RD.
I think this is inaccurate and overstates the role of religion in admissions. Plenty of Catholic applicants are deferred (or denied) EA. Only about half the student body is Catholic.
My D was accepted EA with a very generous merit offer. Sheās agnostic and from a public school.
Our student is Catholic, attended a Catholic HS, showed tons of demonstrated interest, got into Cal, and was STILL deferred by SCU.
Pretty sure religion is not a primary factor.
@DroidsLookingFor did your daughter end up winning the Johnsonās Scholarship? Just curious.
Well in a somewhat unfortunate instance of a somewhat unfortunate pattern, my daughter determined that SCU was not where her heart was, and so left the money on the table and committed elsewhere. If I added up all the merit $ thrown at her, and additional $ not pursued, I might weep.
Understood and sympathized with.
How did you inform them, Is there an email address. We are on the same boat.
Sorry not sure as my DD handled it themselves. Worst case you can just let it lapse.
I think thereās an option in the portal when you reply to the offer of admission where you can decline it. Which, in the case of at least two other schools, resulted in a āeven though you said know if you change your mind let us knowā email.
which major you applied ED for ?
Will be applying next year for college of engineering
Any dorm advice? Would love to know the vibe of each area.
Also info on sororities.
Personally, I like the Graham or Finn dorm area. But with a compact campus, all of the dorms are well located.
The sororities are all pretty much the same ā nice, social opportunities and welcoming girls who want to connect and be involved. It all comes down to personal preference where your student sees a āfitā.
