Sarah Lawrence, Reed College, anything similar?

I am very interested in Sarah Lawrence and Reed, could anyone recommend similar colleges. I am looking for a college that is composed of students that were ‘outcasts’ in high school, colleges that are political, and colleges that have a low teacher to student ratio.

Thank you for your answers. All information is highly appreciated

Maybe look at Hampshire?

Bard?

Evergreen, Hampshire, Goucher, Oberlin, Grinnell…but seriously, neither Sarah Lawrence nor Reed is solely composed of former “outcasts.”

iconoclasts rather than outcasts maybe. What about Wesleyan? St John of Annapolis and New Mexico?

Technically, the OP characterized the students as “‘outcasts,’” not “outcasts,” but I agree the word in either usage does not adequately describe the student bodies at these colleges. Beyond that, do Reed and Sarah Lawrence often get considered together?

In some ways, many selective colleges are havens for high school outcasts. These schools are almost exclusively comprised of those who valued and excelled at academics in high school. The atmosphere often becomes one that celebrates both hard work and achievement.

if you mean schools that celebrate nonconformity, then the schools listed here are good ones to consider. Check the Common Data Set for each school, section C, to compare your stats to those of admitted students so you can chance yourself.

^We should pin a thread in Chances on “how to chance yourself”!

Good selection so far, based on the ones I know. I think “outcast” is extreme, though, since it really depends on the community you’re coming from. The kids in my community who are interested in these schools are certainly not outcasts. But I’ve been in other communities where maybe that would be accurate. But quirky, non-conformist, embracing of diversity, sure.

Gawd, yes, we should tell kids how to match themselves. And forget to put USNews in the instructions.

What the heck does outcast mean here? Anti-social, not many friends, or on a wild tear into their own interests and comfortable with that? Or a really neat , active kid who just isn’t into the same old/same old?

I’dd add Bennington. Get a Fiske Guide and start looking at schools they say are like SL and Reed. And then do the same for each new suggestion. But don’t get fooled when anyone or anything says, eg, that a college is political. You have to see if it’s the right mix for you. And that’s deeper than any one comment.

Maybe Bennington, Bard, Hampshire, Goucher, Oberlin, Occidental, SUNY New Paltz, UC Santa Cruz, Wesleyan?

Earlham, Knox, Lawrence, Kalamazoo and Wooster, as well as Beloit and Lawrence University in WI, all have a range of kids, from males in skirted to Vineyard Vines, and are communities where students feel welcomed for who they are.

By outcasts, I was referring to people that are considered ‘weird’. People who are seen as social outcasts. Thanks for all the information. I have friends that went to Sarah Lawrence, I’m well aware of its student body.

Yes,thank you. That is what I was referring to. I apologize for my poor selection of words.

Reed and SLC are rather different in academic offerings. Be sure to consider academic offerings in relation to your academic interests.

They are both amazing general liberal arts schools. I am looking to schools that feature an emphasis on writing. However, I am mostly interested in schools that have a good general liberal arts education. I understand that Reed is better for nuclear science and biology.

You would get a great liberal arts education across the board at Reed.
