The August selection is Sarahs Key by Tatiana De Rosnay.

This post is an open invitation to anyone who has read or intends to read the book, and is interested in discussing it. Please join us!

As with the June and July selections, we will not begin discussing the book until the 15th of the month. There are no rules for our online chat, just a request that no spoiler plot developments be revealed before August 15th, as a kindness to those who are still mid-read.

I’ll be away the middle of the month, but just wanted to say I loved this book. Thanks so much for choosing it as I might not have found it otherwise.

Same here. I will be away on vacation from the 15th to the 23rd without internet access for most of it - Yay!! I am sad that I will miss what I expect to be a fantastic discussion but will catch up when I get back.

BTW - if anyone needs a copy you can get it at Target for $11.80.

I have already read the book but my IRL book club is also reading Sarah’s Key for August so I am planning on rereading it so I can participate in the conversation. I am away on the 15th but will look forward to seeing what everyone has to say when I get back.

I also read Sarah’s Key earlier this summer and I will be curious to see what others think, although I will be away on vacation a good part of the rest of the month. Our local Borders Express closed in May and it was on the Staff Picks table. Everything in the store was 40% off and so I picked it up without having heard anything about it.

I think I may have recommended Sarah’s Key in the ‘favorite book’ thread several weeks ago. I enjoyed it a lot and would not be surprised if it is made into a film someday. Not sure how much I’ll be around next week but I do look forward to hearing what others think of it.

seiclan, The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorite books, and another that I think I’ve recommended on CC previously! :)

I am going to jump right in and start with a spoiler, so if you haven’t finished the book, don’t read any more of my post.

When I got to page 8, and read “She closed the door on the little white face, turned the key in the lock,” I looked up at my daughter (who had already read the book) and said, “Don’t tell me that little boy is going to die a horrible death in the cupboard, because if that’s the case, I am going to close this book and not read another word.” I knew the answer by the look on her face, but she convinced me that I had to read on, and I did.

I’m glad I read the book, but that central story, and the scene where she returns to the apartment, is so terrible, terrible, terrible…

Did any of you know instantly that the outcome would be tragic, or did you hold out hope that Sarah’s brother would somehow be saved?

No, I also figured that her brother was going to die. But I also thought the family would all end up in a death camp where (obviously) the daughter would live. Although it was no doubt horrible to die in the closet, it is not much worse than what a young child would have faced in the death camps. It is actually pretty much what he would have faced in addition to some beatings or other horrible things.
