Sartorial experts: Men's "dress belt?"

My son is the same! Tall and thin. He went to Penney’s and bought a navy jacket. Not exactly Brooks Brothers, but it was inexpensive. He’s using it for fraternity stuff, so it doesn’t really matter that it’s not top-of-line.

Penny’s? It didn’t occur to me that they might carry the size. Thanks for the tip!

Of course $98 is ridiculous for a belt! I’d only spend that much for a good dog collar.

When my son was looking for a suit, we went to Brooks Brothers (on a Monday AM when it wasn’t busy) and told the salesman he needed an education in how to buy a suit. We made it quite clear that we would probably not be buying the suit from them. The salesman was delighted not to be bored, and spent quite a while explaining fit and finish. My son bought a lovely suit for $250 on sale at another store, had it altered, and it looks great. Brooks Brothers remains my choice to knowledge. And I expect my son will buy there, someday.

mafool-
Try Syms- Great range of sizes at great prices, for suits. And those cole Haan boots-- $475??.

dmd-
LOL. Dogs should be treated special. They are. they love us unconditionally and don’t talk back. They also don’t wreck their cars or argue when we take them to the groomer to get their hair and or fur trimmed. They just wag their tails and lick our faces.

doublepaly-
Do they still nave Maas Brothers dept store in the Gainesville Mall? Used to get good sale deals there.

Brooks Brother’s starter suits are in the $600 range. http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=249</a> They will alter the suit for the life of the suit–and they guarantee their shirts. We bought one that frayed and took it back–at another store in another state. “So sorry sir.”

jym626- I don’t know about Syms. Is it a regional store?

Let me see if they are in Michigan. Another option is Loehmann’s. I think they have mens suits too. Also mens warehouse. Any of these in your area?

jym262, you’re great!

I’m on the other side of the state (Think the “pinky” side of the mitten, sort of near the knuckle on the hand). We’re really not in the “sticks,” though some retailers apparently think so!

JYM: your dog may not argue when you take her to the groomer, but mine do! They stand in the door and say, very clearly, “not going in there, not no way, not no how… oh wait, is that a liver brownie? sure, I’ll go in there for a liver brownie!” I bet you thought I was kidding about the dog collar? I paid close to that for a particularly pretty Coach collar. I have poodles, they have an image to keep up!

lol dmd…I spend the bucks on cute sweaters for my chihuahua. She unfortunately has no need for haircuts, therefore shivers year round.

(I actually think all the shaking is a just a nervous chihuahua thing; but it does make ME feel better to see her in a sweater.)

dmd77-
I miss my sweet doggie :frowning: Funny how we spend our $$ on our pets. Mine went to big cardiology bills and 90’ drives each way to/from the cardiologist and expensive medicine including meds imported from England that required an FDA waiver. Sorry, but as beautiful as my dog was, he wore cheap nylon collars with pictures of little bones on it. But the scarfs that the groomer put on him were a nice touch :)

I’m so cheap I groom my own dogs - and let me tell you , it’s no easy task; they are Bedlington Terriers! When I ordered my grooming supplies I told the guy I didn’t know how to groom and when I told him what kind of dogs I had he nearly fainted. Ha. I got a poodle breeder friend to teach me the equipment and I studiously watched a video tape of the Bedlington cut and went to work. Most people recognize that they are, ummm, a breed they aren’t familiar with. LOL. And three years later I haven’t hurt them or cut their ear off (knock on wood!).

weenie-
You have bedlingtons?? A dear friend in Fla has a bedlington. I have always loved them, but never understood why they groom their heads to look like their faces were put in a pencil sharpener! Maybe sothat they will look more like dogs and less like sheep?? (My friend says if one more person tells her her dog looks like a lamb she will SCREAM!)

It’s funny when people ask if they are sheep - often it’s kids, and they are serious! Ha. What we (my dogs and me) don’t like is when people look at them and say, “Hmmm. I can see they are part poodle, but what’s the other part?” Grrrr. The other funny thing is people guess they are Airedales. Ummm…they are about 50 pounds off on that one.

Yeah, I wish they had t-shirts that say “I am a Bedlington Terrier.” People constantly stop us wherever we go.

Saturday night the kids were jumping into the limo for homecoming and one boy had forgotten his belt. He turned to the driver and offered him $4 to rent his. The deal was closed. Belt and money changed hands. Driver spent evening holding up pants, but boy was feeling fine.

Gotta admire the guts.

mafool,
Here is the type of jacket I get for my sons- $89!! Can’t beat it- if they mess it up or lose it, oh well. I call it the “disposable” jacket.

Brooks Brothers is great! But not the regular-priced store…there’s an outlet near my house that’s lower on the scale than the regular BB outlets. There are great bargains to be had (ties for $10, shirts for $10-15, belts would probably be $15 too). The only catch is that sometimes it’s random as to whether they’ll have your size or not.

I got a very nice $500 or $600 wool dress coat there for less than $100. :)

My dog is a black shepherd/lab/Heinz mix. I get stopped all the time when I’m walking him by people who want to know ‘is that a wolf?’ He walks with his head low and really does look – at times – like he’s hunting for Red Riding Hood. But alas, his legs are too short for the complete wolf look.

I love Syms, Loehmann, Filene’s…all the places I went with Grandma as a kid. Good bargains, good quality (if you’re careful) and plenty of choice.
