During the American civil war, American Red Cross founder Clara Barton ministered to soldiers on the ** battlefields, at Antietam, so close was she to the actual fighting ** that a bullet pierced her sleeve.

I chose

E. battlefields; she was at Antietam so close to the actual fighting so…

The answer is

D. battlefields; at Antietam, she was so close to the actual fighting…

Can anyone explain why i got WRONG?

I’d say E is more convoluted than D. Also it avoids saying “so that” which is awkward. Need expert advice on this though.

Hint: E. battlefields; she was at Antietam so close to the actual fighting so…

Was she close to the actual fighting, or was Antietam? Can we tell?

The answer is D because of the structure (so…that)

(E) mis-employs a correlative conjunction. The proper form is “so [adjective]…that” as in “I was so big that I bumped the elephant.” Analogously with choice (E), that would read “I was so big so that I bumped the elephant.” “so” is incorrectly repeated.

“Antietam” is a reference to the location of the battle.
