SAT 2 important?

Are SAT2s important for admission? I mean, does it affect my chances much? I got a 690 for literature and i’m wondering if i should retake it…

bump, haha me too, but I am retaking. From what I heard one 690 won’t make the difference if everything else is good.

That 690 may be a problem. Rather than retake it, you could just take two other subjects you are comfortable in and hopefully get scores of 750+. Once your SAT I score is 2100+, it doesn’t matter that much anymore, as grades and personal achievements are also important. However, strong SAT II scores can show understanding of other subjects. Ideally though, if you are a competitive applicant, there should be at least two subjects in which you can score 700+, or better yet, 750+.

regretfully, i’m probably only comfortable with literature in SAT 2 - everything else is irrelevant to me ><

i guess i’ll have to retake it

While this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this ideology, perhaps you could be the first person to show me some proof? Your SAT score does not diminish in importance as it goes up, and a high SAT score does not make up for low SAT II scores.

Everything is important, and often times, all it takes it one imperfect thing for you to be rejected from a school like Columbia. Hell, it doesn’t even take one thing–one forth of one thing. If you have the opportunity to retake it or take two others in its place then do it. However, if your SAT score is lacking (and by lacking I don’t mean below , I mean below what you could score if you take it again) it might best serve your interests to retake that instead of the SAT II.

You said nothing else is relevant to you, but remember you have to take 2 SAT IIs (3 if you plan on applying to Princeton or Harvard.)

I didn’t mean that all you need is a score of 2100+, I just meant that worrying about retaking the SAT I while you have a 2200, or 2250, isn’t really going to get you anywhere, not that 2100+ is a definite threshold. I was also talking about the SAT I by itself, that getting a score in the range of 2100+ would be good if its only the SAT I we’re talking about. Obviously, you would also need high SAT II scores, which I mentioned as well. Basically, when applying, all you can hope for is to have your scores as high as possible, and then you still have to fill out the actual application itself.

SAt IIs are not nearly as important as SAT Is. If everything else is equal a 690 on Lit will not keep you out, anyone who said otherwise is being delusional…

Is it looked down upon to take an SAT II in your first language?
I took Spanish with Listening and got an 800, as well as US History and got a 750, but is it still advisable to take another test? I was thinking of doing Math 1 or 2, but I wouldn’t be able to take them until the November SAT if at all…
Math 2 covers up to pre-calc? I took Calc AB/BC last year, but math is not my strongest subject, and I’m not sure how well I’ll be able to do in the test… I may not break 700s.
Is the language test so bad that I should look to strengthen it by taking a math one as well?

There’s nothing against you if you take an SAT II in your own language, but if you don’t get 800, then it is. That means it isn’t a problem for you. You should definitely take Math II, not I. Math I does not really help you at all. Just get a review book and make sure you know how to do all of the practice problems.

what if you are an ex patriot that only has 4 years of living experience in your “mother” tongue. Would a non 800 score look bad still? I received a 770, and the only reason I took it was because I thought it may come in handy to bypass some language requirements at certain colleges…

I already have a SAT2 on Chinese with listening so I was more worried for the second subject. I’m from Malaysia and we have very little materials when it comes to SAT2 subjects and i haven’t done math in a year + (why do something if you’re not confident at it, right?) so i suppose lit’s the only thing for me

My first SAT1 score was 1940 and i’m retaking that - since i don’t suppose i’d have the slimmest chance of entering with that score ><

As an international, no, you don’t. Your application is on a global scale - you’ll need a score in the 2300s to be fairly competitive.

You don’t necessarily need 2300+ to get in. I was an international applicant, and I only had a score in the high 2100s, and I got in, albeit I was ED. Having a high score may help, but you also need an interesting personal story as well.
