**SAT 2 Literature Discussion Thread Oct 2015**

  1. did anyone say that the verse w the singing birds in the islands meant that he found satisfaction in himself?
  2. did anyone say that the narrator showed the characters (chancellor and chen) through dialogue? or gestures?

I said dialogue characterized the mother

also, how did the narrator show the social reformer’s character? it just kept using olive in the answer choices…

Yes for nonchalant, yes for unintentionally condescending, yes for kitchen chores, yes for suitable = socially accepted. I didn’t understand why it was condescending, but none of the answers made any sense so it was clearly that one

What were the “gains” on the first poem?

I’m thinking 7 wrong 6 blank now lol, that gives me like a 700 and thats so risky

what were the answers to the gains question

did the mom in those few lines given go from reasoning to passionate?? thats wut i put.

reasoning to passion yeah

Forgetting the exact question but it had to do with the music teacher’s mother refusing cheaper lessons, what was the answer?

Yeah for the one where all the answer choices were Olive, I said that it was the one where it used her as a contrast to temper Olives eagerness. It wasn’t obvious, but during the first paragraph, the woman is shown to be very cold and unresponsive, in direct contrast to Olives eagerness and romantic idealism (which I put for another answer).

i also wasn’t sure about the last question in the sophia/mom passage. was the relationship dynamic persuasive, patient, angry, etc

Nah not eagerness to passion, it was diplomatic to direct. At first she tries to reason with her by trying to point out the lunacy of ‘staying at school forever’. But then she loses patience and tells her to get out the way.

did anyone get icily haughty for an answer

Really not sure about gains, I put that it was future happiness. Again that was by process of elimination though. I thought the writer was implying that though you might grieve now, look to he children for future happiness

what was the context of the “Gains” question

I think its seemingly nonchalant, and I think it was reasoning and passion since she got passionate and mad about Sophia being in her way

Yeah future happiness for gains

Suitable=socially acceptable
Chauffeur lacked social prestige
For they’d condemn Sophia EXCEPT I said insisting on a career. I thought it was saying she can pursue a career, just not one that lacked social prestige.
I said enjoying aesthetic nature for the second stanza of that sea poem. Why is it romance?

Unsure about icily haughty. Can you remember the question and other answers ? I think I put detached.
