D is taking her second year of Honors World History. She did not choose to take AP World History this year as a sophomore. Will she be prepared enough to get a decent score (650 range) with just her honors global class (NY state regents curriculum)?

She will be taking APUSH as a junior, but since she will be applying to NYU (as a studio art major), she can use three SAT2 scores in lieu of regular SAT’s if it is to her benefit.

Thanks!

I’m not positive, but I’m inclined to say no. I would recommend getting a study book and reviewing the material. Honors courses generally do a good way of outlining material, but not specifically going into material. I can’t be sure, but I would say that her best bet is to get a review book and simply study out of it.

She would definitely use a study book…but would that be enough to compete with kids who have taken AP Global? About a 650 should do the trick…because then she could take APUSH as a junior and take the SAT 2 and also take the English lit SAt 2 junior year. That would give her 4 scores to use to submit 3 (in lieu of the regualar SAT – if necessary!)

I am hedging my bets so that she does not have to use a math score if it is a weakness. Hard to predict, but right now she is struggling with algebra 2/trig. Since she already got a 650 on Bio SAT 2, she only needs that score and 2 history/ English.

650 is not really effective in any schools. She should at least go for 700.

I would advise that she take a practice test. If she does well on it (maybe 720?) she could then try the real thing.

I took the SAT II in WH with no AP class. As for which history classes I’ve had, I took Honors Modern History in 9th grade, APUSH in 10th grade, and AP Human Geography and AP Art History in 11th grade. I think all of my history classes helped me a lot, even though they weren’t APWH. There was a piece of artwork on the test that I had seen before in Art History, tons of ancient history which I’d only recently encountered in that class, the sort of general survey stuff we did in Human Geo, and of course stuff from APUSH.
As far as review, the day before the test, I pulled out my 9th grade notebook and reread it in its entirety. I had all day, so I didn’t feel rushed, though what I was doing was certainly cramming. Then I took a practice test. I think I got a 750 or so on the practice test and a 770 on the real thing. So it’s definitely possible to do well without taking the class. I chose to take WH for just that reason, because it seemed like one of the most “general knowledge” SAT IIs. I recommend it to almost all my friends.

collegegoer: Umm 650 not effective in ANY school? Not the wisest advice I’ve heard.

Older D somehow made it to college with a 670 bio, 640 US, and a 630 Math 1.

She was accepted into NYU, Barnard, Brandeis, American, GW, Muhlenberg and Binghamton–many with excellent merit aid. As a matter of fact she was accepted into every school she applied to. And her SAT’s were below 700 in both verbal and math.

Blanket statements like yours are untrue and only panic people!

to be honest… those schools aren’t exactly the schools that the aspiring students of america go for…

lol…good luck on your road to fame and fortune!!!

I mean… 630 especially for math 1 is pretty terrible. it seems that your daughter didnt apply to especially difficult schools. NYU? lol…

Yup…she did do pretty terrible on Math 1…and her SAT scores did not match her GPA/ EC’s and rank. But y’know that is not what it is all about. She chose not to apply to the Ivies because they did not offer her major. And we did not push her to go in that direction just to say she went to an Ivy league school. Plus, she wouldn’t have gotten any money from the Ivies…but got a nice talent scholarship from NYU. She is excelling in a top program in what she loves to do. And has had amazing internship opportunites. Life does go on beyond the Ivies. Take more time to see the big picture, rather than looking down on others.
