I thought merit aid for OOS was meant to bring tuition down to in-state levels, to be competitive with the home state’s flagship. So it’s really a wash, right? An OOS doesn’t actually cost any more do they?

Merit aid is not really “financial aid”. Michigan can and does attract large numbers of OOS students from NY, NJ, Ill, MA, CT, PA, etc because families who can afford it see significant value added in a Michigan education vs. their in-state flagship, and are willing to pay an extra $25-30K per year to send their child to Ann Arbor.

@dormdad They are offering more need based aids to OOS than before even for students from lower middle class families.
Michigan meets 100% of demonstrated need to in-state students and is now working to guarantee 100% of demonstrated need to OOS
