SAT-ACT prep???

although i am a freshman in high school, i would like to get a start on preping for the SATs and ACTs. do you guys think its weird? because i want to make sure i get a good score on it so i can get into a good college without problems. i mean…im not going to like spend all of my time studing or anything…just a couple times here and there. but does anyone know some good websites or any good study tips or stuff like that that might come in handy later on when i start really prepping or start appling for colleges?

At this point, since it is slightly early, I don’t think you should actively study at all. However, if you really want to do something, do the SAT Question of the Day every day. It can be helpful, and when you really start studying, you’ll find that you’re very familiar with the little traps that are inserted into the questions. I was like you, and I wanted to start early, and I did the question of the day thing, and I found that it was very helpful in the long run. However, it takes a while before you begin to see results, but I assure you that they will come.

And also, keep in mind that an SAT score isn’t what will get you into a prestigious college, nor is it necessarily what will keep you out.

really? i thought that the SAT score was really important! woah…thats a big load off of my shoulders. thanks. and i will do the SAT question of the day.

That’s a very common misconception. These days, so long as your score is decent, so over about 2250, you’re fine. College admissions depend on an extensive list of factors, and SAT score is one of the most important.

what other factors are they looking for?

“so long as your score is decent, so over about 2250”

So anything below 2250 is not decent? Lol…

yeah mj93…what were your scores again?
well for you it doesnt really matter because your only in 9th grade.
where did you go to take those tests? did you actually go to a building or did you do it on the internet?

Well, I was talking about prestigious colleges when I said that 2250 is decent, but really anything near that score is fine.

A good thing to keep in mind is that colleges usually only look at the Critical Reading and Math sections of the test.

although for this last year of admissions colleges generally focused on math/CR, I believe that now that there’s been more than 2 years of testing since the writing section was introduced in 2005, there is enough data for them to consider writing scores valid…especially since there is not an SAT ii for writing anymore. for the class of 2009 and on especially, writing can certainly count and may be used in freshmen writing courses as a benchmark for your performance. not everywhere, but it is likely to be a growing trend. if you’re just a freshman you do have plenty of time. don’t find yourself in a bind though, when it is junior year and you are scrambling to balance a million activities, a social life, family, school, etc. i got just over a 2200, headed for the ivy league…i would agree that the Question of the Day is a good start for someone in your position. when you’re ready to prep more seriously, then you can look at books like the PR 11 practice tests/blue book or the online program at ■■■■■■■■■■■■.com. both are good investments; you really need to practice practice practice…it’s that simple, ultimately. as far as ACT and SAT…don’t prep for both. it’s a waste of resources. if you’re a science person, try the ACT i guess. the best thing to do is take a practice test for each test, see which you did best on, let that guide your decision. test scores are not the end all be all, but you need to do well for top schools and since it’s so competitive, anything helps so there is less dependency on your ECs, essay, recs. PM me if you want stats or my advice on specific ECs that help admissions

one again rockermcr… that is a common misconception
2250 is not necessary…
