SAT by Race at the University of Florida

I finally received the data from the admissions office. I have my own ideas about how to interpret it, but I will just report it. The only thing I do want to clarify- on a previous post, people were flaming me and making statements like affirmative action gives someone with similar stats a “Slight”: advantage. I think it is clear from this hard data that, at least at UF, checking one of the boxes on the race menu determines which separate set of criteria will be used to evaluate your application. In other words, there are 5 or 6 completely criteria sets with respect to quantifiable data and which race you check determines which set will be applied to your application.

1324(Asian SAT) - 1187(Black SAT) = 137 point spread by race.

Using the normdist function in Excel, I estimate that :

A 1324 is ~ the 93’rd percentile of all SAT Test Takers
An 1187 is ~ the 75’th percentile of all SAT Test takers

This will go well.

“This will go well.”

???

Ok? What exactly does this mean?

Is this another saga in your tireless crusade against anything AA? Are you arguing the merits or just complaining.

Private institutions can do what they like, regardless of whether I agree with them, but it saddens me that many of the public institutions of America discriminate on the basis of race.

“Is this another saga in your tireless crusade against anything AA? Are you arguing the merits or just complaining.”

I’m reporting data. You are getting aggressive about it.

Not the UCs, thankfully.

And, this is some good data. Some good data indeed.

They actually RELEASED this data? Wow…

It is a bit perplexing why state institutions still practice AA.

But what will you do with this information?

^^ you cannot make the conclusion that it’s AA. Correlation does not imply causation. The UCs, for example, look at the applicants in their context, and overcoming adversity is seen as a plus for admission. Thus, often those from low socioeconomic backgrounds–underrepresented minorities, quite often–get a boost in admissions, given their accomplishments despite their adversities. It wasn’t their ethnicity–it was their situation.

Well, the people that benefit from this will be very vocal about it. I actually don’t mind if the gap isn’t too wide.

Maybe the Black / Asian disparity would be narrower if you could field the athletic teams with Asians.

There are many reasons for the URM advantage , from sports , diversity goals , University marketing or giving the disadvantaged a chance for a better life.

If you think this is unfair , try growing up in the projects and you will see unfair.
