SAT Critical Reading questions

Hi, I’m preparing for the SAT, and while taking some practice tests, I found some questions that I could not understand its explanation.

(the passage for the following question can be found on 8th page of this link (or, as the page number goes, on pg. 9): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-SjC2QWxqXRU1FWUXQ5REtqSXM/view )

  1. In the last paragraph, Nikhil's parents are presented as (A) amused by Nikhil's independence (B) compliant with Nikhil's decision (C) confused about how to behave (D) suspicious of Nikhil's motives (E) resentful toward Nikhil's roommates

I chose (C), though for unknown reason; I did not know how to tackle this problem. I completely don’t get why the answer is (B). Where does the author indicate/infer that the parents were "compliant with Nikhil’s decision?

Another question:

  • the passage for the following question can be found on 36th page of the same link above (or, as the page number goes, on pg. 37)
  1. It can be inferred from the final paragraph (lines 62-84) that the author considers the making of great art to be a (A) rare luxury (B) decandent activity (C) democratic ideal (D) full-time endeavor (E) poorly paid profession

I chose (C), because the last passage said that people in the aristocratic/high social class didn’t indulge in artistic activity so much. The logic seemed to follow that, since the majority of people who do indulge in art are from middle class, albeit mainly males, making of great art could be called “democratic ideal.” I vacillated a bit among choices (C), (D), and (E). Could you explain to me why the answer is (D), “full-time endeavor”? And why choice (C) and (E) don’t work?

Much help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. They comply (obey) his request to call him Nikhil instead of Gogol (aside from one accidental slip-up).
  2. (D) because he says women and aristocrats don't have time to produce great art.
