SAT Dilemma

I took the SAT 3 times and I am wondering which to send and how colleges will view it. This is my history. Also, my superscore is a 1550. For schools like Harvard that said they won’t superscore but take into account my highest scores, am I as good as a 1550 normal scorer?

2022 (10th Grade - Paper) 1380 (800 in math, 580 RW)
2024 (12th Grade - Digital) 1510 (790 in math, 720 RW)
2024 (12th Grade - Digital) 1510 (750 in math, 750 RW)

i would send the 750/750 personally. I think more people score higher in math than verbal so that 750 verbal sets you apart, and I like the balance. I don’t think 1500 vs 1510 or 1550 would make a difference and if you don’t get it it won’t be the SAT score keeping you out.

but ironically that adds up to 1500, not 1510.

Well, Harvard aside, while the College Board allows superscoring across test formats (paper vs digital), it seems that at least some colleges do not allow that. Assuming such, then from that perspective, your 1380 (along with the 800 in math) would not really come into play.

I agree with billythegoldfish and submit the second 2024, but would also submit the first 2024 where schools do superscore. I further agree with billy that whether your score is a 1500, 1510 or 1550, will probably not be the deciding factor on whether you are accepted. Good luck!

For schools that allow self reporting on the common app, like Harvard, you will report your highest SAT section scores (EBRW 750, Math 800). ACT reporting includes highest composite score as well as highest section scores. That’s all you need to do for many schools. Save the money and don’t send official scores until you enroll in a college. To be clear, for self reporting, schools will never see the 580 (or any of the scores that aren’t the highest ones.)

Here’s what the common app testing section looks like:

For schools that require official schools at application time, send all your scores. I think it’s unlikely that an AO is going to ding you for that 580 in 10th grade, given two much higher scores later.

Do you have examples?

I googled: “do colleges superscore paper and digital sat scores”

One of the first results was that of Princeton that said this:

So, that was my basis for saying “it seems that at least some colleges do not allow that”.

Yes, Princeton didn’t even allow self-reporting and just to submit my scores. Sending 3 scores/ 1 score doesn’t change the cost as long as it’s one send. So for Princeton, that I have to send scores, which exactly should I send. Should I still go with just the 1500 (forget about cost) or should I also send with the other 2

Oh wow! Thanks a lot! I think that means I will send all 3 scores to Princeton! Thanks so much!

Just to talk about it…Princeton’s website per the info above says they won’t superscore between digital and paper…but that doesn’t mean they would ignore the highest section scores if one were in digital and the other in paper (as in your case.) We don’t really know.

But, in your case, given Princeton’s policy, I might not send the 10th grade score. It’s up to you. Either way, I don’t think your admission decision will come down to test scores (but I don’t know that of course.)

Oh wow. Thanks tho. Now that I think of it, I think my counselor wrote about how I got 800 in Math from 10th grade so I may want to cover that up. But I’ll ask him. If he didn’t or decides not to tell me (FERPA) then I won’t submit the 1380.

Personally, I think you have great scores, alone or combined. You should be happy with them. And, if it were me, I would happily submit them.

For what it is worth, as it applies to your counselor putting your early 800 score in his letter, I see the appeal, but it probably isn’t necessary. I mean it’s not REALLY incrementally better than the 790 that you would also be reporting. Also, however, it won’t necessarily hurt for him to include it. However, I would NOT suggest that you try to include that tidbit anywhere, because the place to do that would be your reported scores section which would simply highlight the absence of the erbw score.

I would NOT send your first test scores to any school. There is almost no difference between 800 and 790. The score of 580 is so jarring compared to your more recent scores that IMO, it draws negative attention. Never draw attention to a negative.

Between the two scores that you got in 12th grade, which is better might depend upon your major. For a math or engineering or computer science major, the 790 in math would be great, and the 720 in English would be still very good (and the 720 in English is way better than I did as a native English speaker). For a humanities major the 750/750 might be better.

These scores are of course very good.
