Or is it the portfolio that sets someone apart once they pass the general university requirements?

AParental Unit:

My daughter is a current student in architecture at Syracuse. While there is no SAT/GPA “requirement” for architecture at Syracuse, we were told by the admissions people there that the SAT scores of this year’s freshman architecture students are the highest of any college at the University…by a significant amount. The program has consistently ranked in the top 5-7 undergrad programs in the country, so admission is competitive, with maybe 10 applicants or so for every spot in the freshman class.

My observation of the architecture admissions process is that it depends, probably about equally, on three factors…portfolio, interview and high school performance/SAT/GPA/EC’s. Individual applicants may excel in one of these three areas more than another, but all three are given significant weight.

I think what you mean to say is that there is no minimum SAT/GPA cut-off score.

Thanks much for your helpful info!

When we visited the Architecture Dept said the first criteria is the portfolio, then she showed us examples of ratings 1 - 5. She said 1’s and 2’s were automatically passed to the admissions office for further review for admission. I am sure they looked at the application as well. Drawing is a high criteria.
