SAT Grammar Question?? (From Collegeboard Website)

This question was from the 600-690 grade band on the Collegeboard Website:

Just when the staff thought things were going (A smooth) at the newspaper, a crisis erupted that (B brought about ) (C a change in priorities), including (D greater attention to) sensational news

I know that smooth should be smoothly but can someone explain why it is GREATER attention? I thought greater can only be used to refer to countable things?

Well, it’s a tricky one.

Although you are right, that is not the reason why you are wrong.

It should be, “A greater attention to…”

verbs such as “giving” should have preceeded “greater”, because “greater attention to” is the subject and “sensational news” is the object, therefore a preeceding verb(gerund) or verb phrase is required.
