In modern societies, individuals often try to depend on themselves in order to create new ideas. Many people constantly seek the approval and eulogy of others by formulating their own thoughts; however, we do not need to always create our own ideas when we can simply use the ideas of others. This notion is exemplified through the history of China’s modernization as well as the technological development of the internet.

In the 1980’s, Deng Xiaoping became the new leader of the People’s Republic of China, a young nation that suffered from Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward. While Deng Xiaoping believed that creating one’s own economic policy involves risks, he realized that China was better off adopting another well-developed policy that was feasible and practical. As opposed to Mao Zedong, whose own policy starved millions of people, Deng Xiaoping chose to implement western ideas of Capitalism in order to alleviate poverty. As a result of adopting an existing idea of governing, Deng Xiaoping was successful in reducing poverty by over 20%. Inferring to the history of Deng Xiaoping’s success, one can perceive the notion that creativity is not necessarily needed in modern society, as Deng Xiaoping once exclaimed, “It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice!”
Not only are the ideas of others used in Modern China, but the borrowing of ideas is also apparent in the U.S. development of the internet. In the 1960’s, the USSR launched Sputnik, the first satellite to launch into space. Although the satellite did nothing more than orbiting the earth, the U.S. research scientists feared that their technology would be inferior to the Soviet Union’s technology; therefore, the U.S. acknowledged that they needed to spend all efforts in space development. They imitated the Soviet Union’s idea of the satellite to develop an improved version of the satellite that could store information and communicate with the earth, which eventually allowed the U.S. to invent the internet. From using the USSR’s idea of the satellite, the U.S. was able to utilize the idea of the first satellite for its needs.
In conclusion, people are better off using existing ideas as opposed to formulating new ones. Some may argue that creativity allows a person to explore new possibilities in life, but the negative consequences of that outweigh the good.
