What is a very good score on the essay portion of the SAT I? What would a college like Stanford want to see? And would a college like MIT or CalTech care much at all about that portion of the SAT?

12 on the essay that’s two perfect scores

However they care more about the overall score than just the essay portion so if you are in the 10-12 range and your other scores are outstanding you should be fine. Best of luck

Additionally, more applicants to the selective tech schools (harvey mudd, MIT, Caltech, ect.) have perfect math scores with mediocre (by CC standards, I’m talking high 600-low 700 range) writing and critical reading sections. A tidbit to consider is that far fewer test takers get a perfect 800 writing then a perfect 800 math, so it is a “rarer” score. an essay in the 10-12 range won’t detract from your bubble ins, the essay is worth 30% of the overall writing section. A great essay can often boost a less-great bubble in.
