SAT II for Economics Students

Hi guys!
I am an AS level student, with six subjects, and I’m giving the exams the following summer. Though I’ve taken engineering subjects too, I’m more inclined to go on the Economics side. I’m facing a dilemma as to whether I should go for the SAT-II or not. A lot of universities like University of Chicago don’t need SAT II for economics programs, and I’ve already given the SAT I once, having scored 2240. Should I give SAT II, or improve score in SAT I?

Your SAT 1 score is fine. I think you should give Maths IIC.

Economics programs, in particular UChicago and other top schools, place great emphasis on mathematics. As such, I would recommend taking a math test along with any other subject.

Your SAT I is fine; no need for resits. Even if not required, good SAT II scores can only help your application.

Thanks guys. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help! But you see, as regards my scores, there is one technicality, that may pose certain difficulties; that is, my component scores. I have 790 in Verbal Writing, 800 in Math, and 650 in Critical Reading. And the sad part is that university of Chicago doesn’t even need the writing section, which is explicitly written on their website. Is improving he CR score worth it, because I totally agree with what you said about the importance of maths for economics students.

that gets you 1450/1600 - still rocking!!

Thanks very much. However, I am a foreign student, and I need excellent scores in SAT for a a a scholarship. SAT averages in CR for such universities near 700. I’m well below that range.

Mine is 1440 (10 less in Maths). Please understand that internationals do not get much scholarship. However high your score might be, getting a scholarship is quite tough.

How much can you pay for tuition by the way?

If you are going for engineering or Eco then Maths score always is given more priority than English CR. Out of two children (considering Rest is same for both), the one with higher Maths will be chosen in Engineering and Economics

I also am facing same problem, most of the students in America, get very good marks in English and as a result quite high SAT.

With us its exact opposite, I personally do better at Maths then at English (writ+CR). But there is only 1 maths section and 2 English Sections :(

Your question about how much tuition is affordable for me is indeed a very pertinent one; however, I have yet to hold a discussion with my parents to this effect, and I really don’t know how much would qualify as affordable, or even reasonable.
By the way, are you a foreign student too?

Yeah, not exactly foreign, Indian Citizen , American Resident. Born, Brought up in India

99% of students from outside US look for aid and i am assuming you will need it too. If you have any idea about need based universities, look for them and apply there. Your SAT score is actually really good.

You can get into top schools provided you have good ECs. Most ivies give aids to students.
Main problem is ‘foreign’ period

you have very less chance of getting full fee waived so don’t count on it. You will need to pay some tuition fee.

Hey guys, another fellow Indian over here. I have a 2240 too(800 CR 690 M 750 W), a 730 in M2, and a 700 in Eng Lit. Though I’m not applying for scholarships, I am applying for Econ. Judging by the conversations I’ve had with my school counsellor and some admissions officers, a high M2 score is essential. I’d recommend taking that instead of the I again, @Mustinator.

Alright. I guess you’re right, as economics universities do look at Mathematics proficiency. By the way, your CR score is amazing!

@Stanfordmania You are probably the 2nd Indian student with a 800 CR that i have seen.

Hahaha thank you
Good luck to y’all!

I’m considering econ as a minor. I’m taking SAT math II. I took SAT U.S. history, just because I took APUSH. I’m planning to take lit, which will be hard.
