SAT II - Math 1 versus Math 2

I know that the curve for Math 1 is much harder, and that some engineering schools greatly prefer or require the Math 2, but do you look “bad” or “stupid” if you submit the Math 1 if you are saying that you want to be a History major? At this point (end of Junior year) studying for the Math 2 looks like a nightmare, and Math 1 looks easy, and the scores in Math 1 have been very good. However we’re taking BC Calculus senior year.

the short answer is no. If a college says that it accepts M1, then it does.

But if your kid is now in precalc, I would recommend M2 anyway. It is much less forgiving of a test. One of my kids was a future lit major, and easily cleared 700 on M2 with just a little review.

If you get a good score in Math1, it would be perfectly fine for non-science and non-engineering major.

Thanks for the comments. We have a 710 in Chem and it appears that we really need just one more test so we’re going to do U.S. History and skip math altogether. His grades in Math are excellent - it’s really just a timing thing, studying for the Math 2 test given everything else going on with his life is just impossible. He’s taking AP USH now so there’s quite a bit of overlap. I think Math 1 looks silly if he’s taking BC Calc next year.

Just take the Math 2.

For a future Humanities kid, one of the two History tests (US History seems like a no-brainer) and English Lit seem like better choices than Math.

Well, if math is your thing, definitely take Math 2. The Math 1 scores are kind of depend on luck in my opinion. A friend of mine took it, got 1 question wrong and scored a 720. So the curve is really bad. But for some kids, 720 is amaazing and they’d be happy to have a 720.
