SAT II writing section

I was using the Kaplan book and i came upon this question:

After depositing and burying her eggs, the female sea turtle returns to the water, never to view or nurture the offspring that she is leaving behind:

I was left to these two choices

Never to view or nurture the offspring which she had left behind

Never to view or nurture the offspring she has left behind

The answer was 2 and i was wondering why 1 wouldn’t work in this case… Is “had” grammatically incorrect or was it just too wordy because it has “which”, an additional added on “wordy” word which isn’t needed.

Because leaving most time relates to present tense…So that wouldn’t work since its talking about past tense and 2 sounds better…

thanks for the advice. I know that had is past participle which has is present participle (i believe). I just felt that it should be past participle as she had left them behind already

As it is “never to view” so she had already left them behind

I thought there was no SAT II Writing anymore?

I have no idea… i am using the book to study for SAT I writing. Just getting as much practice as i can
