Assume a student has registered for and is present on SAT II test day to take three subject tests. He completes the first two, then looks at the third and decides he’d better not answer, he’s unfamiliar with the material and fears receiving a low score.

May he then simply not do that test, turn in the two which he did complete, and 1) not be penalized for having skipped the third test, and 2) receive official scores on the two tests that he did complete?

Last, if available and not too inconvenient, please post a link to whatever section of collegeboard.com that answers this question. I spent an hour looking and couldn’t find one, but have heard this issue is discussed somewhere at that site.

Had a similar situation with daughter last year. She looked at and started the third test. Very quickly, she decided that she would be better off not taking it. (I think it was math II). She was told that if she did not complete it, the other 2 tests would be cancelled. Therefore she completed the test. She didn’t do too terribly, but would have been better to stick to math I only. I suggest you call and speak with someone at collegeboard. If your child leaves after the 2nd test and does not even “look at” the third test, it may be ok–but please double check. We were surprised to find that cancelling the third test once you started it would affect the other 2. My kid may have been given incorrect info by the proctor, but she certainly was not going to take the chance that all test scores would be cancelled. Let us know what you find out, as I am sure this has happened to other people.

There is no need to ever be in this position - pick up a copy of college board’s Real SAT II’s. This will have all the tests. Do practice run of each test you intend to take - then there is no guessing on the test day. If you start a test, you are stuck with it.

Sorry to trouble everyone. I found the answer finally at collegeboard.com.

<< SAT Subject Tests

You must cancel ALL scores for that test date.

* To cancel a score at the test center, ask the test supervisor for a Request to Cancel Test Scores Form, complete it immediately, and return it to the test supervisor before leaving the room. Once your request to cancel scores has been submitted, your scores cannot be reinstated and will not be reported to you or your designated institutions.
If you erase all responses to an individual Subject Test, it will be considered a request for cancellation, and scores from all tests taken on that day will be canceled. >>

So…I don’t get your answer. If the student hasn’t filled any bubbles in on the score sheet and decides to leave…what then??? Is a score of zero better or worse than a low score?? So the moral is…if you think it may be a hard exam for you, register for one exam at a time, look at the exam and cancel before the time ends…sounds like money maker for CB again.

My S registered for three but only took two. He’d made up his mind before he went in, so I imagine he never looked at the third test. He got scores for the two. I am guessing that once you officially are present for the third test, then you’ve made it official and can’t then change your mind.
