My D is away at school and just asked me what she should do. She’s very interested in Rice, probably biology although perhaps research and not necessarily pre-med. She’s scheduled to take AP Bio NEXT grading period, so the last bio class she took was as a freshman in honors bio or something. She’s afraid that she’ll tank the SAT IIs in that subject but Rice is asking for subject tests in possible major or intended program of study. How important is this? Do applicants apply to a particular school within Rice, or is there opportunity to change majors/programs? I’m going to look through website but thought I could get better, practical answers on this forum. Thanks!

Students can change majors easily (with the exception of Architecture and Music). DD has changed majors numerous times, and is still on track to graduate in 4 years. Your D should take the SATs in things that she will do well in. HTHs :)

Has she taken Chemistry recently? In my opinion that will be just as relevant in biology or medical research as the biology SAT II.

I had the same question, so I emailed the admissions office, and they basically told me that the “take SAT II’s in proposed field of study” was just a guideline. In my opinion, doing well in the AP level class (and exam) should demonstrate the same mastery as an SAT II.
