SAT January 2012 - Writing

and @kylelee i put no error…i was going to put “wanted” but then i decided you can say “she wanted to celebrate for her 15th birthday”. i don’t think it’s grammatically incorrect…

so r we in consensus about the 5 NEs due to the 5 examples I had posted before - walnut trees (aspiring), volcano, quincineras, teeming, and speed of sound?

Also for the paragraph did you guys delete the sentence and “however” and also like “on the other hand” or something like that. Also “As… it has been confirmed by evidence” combining 6-7 sentences

Speed of sound isn’t NE.

^^^ what is it everything was parallel? It said sound waves do not travel as fast in water as they do in air, so the speed of sound in air is faster than that (referring to speed) of sound in water.

@Jman, I agree with all of those, but what was the sentence for the walnut trees?

Also, yes on deleting sentence and “however.” don’t remember other two.

It said: “Sound waves travel faster in water than they do in air”
If it were parallel it would say: "Sound waves travel faster in water than in air

they do is fine the they refers to the waveSSSSSS.

@Angel the walnut one was that they produce amounts of aspirin when they sense environmental stresses or something

so is it “elected president” or 'elected for president?"
I think it should be “for” because you would need an article in front of “elected president”

Also, what was the answer for the "provide a paradise for scuba divers?
isnt it supposed to be provide “to” divers?

It is parallel. the “they do” part makes it
Sound waves travel faster in water than sound waves travel in air.
Although the “they do” part isn’t necessary for the sentence, it still follows the parallelism.

‘they do in air’ is not parallel to ‘in water’

Oh, right. Yeah, I was really close to putting NE, but then I didn’t(: It is definitely correct as is.

@Gatbab

“elected for” is also correct, but the purpose of the section is to find the most concise answer that also fixes the error, so elected president is correct.

sound waves travel faster in water than they do (sound waves traveling) in air. It is 100% parallel.

@omgitsthatguy

Elected president and I think provide a paradise for divers is fine

What’s the consensus on the sound wave question?

For the sound one it went something like:

"…the speed of sound in the air is less than that of sound in water…"

I’m not great at grammar (I score over 700 only because I am good at spotting errors, and the SAT only tests a couple errors), but doesn’t “that” refer to “the speed of sound”?
If so wouldn’t it be illogical because it would be something like this if we replaced the “that”
“…the speed of sound in the air is lower than the speed of sound of sound in water…”

i think that has to refer to “speed”

“the speed of sound in the air is less than that of sound in water”

If you’re saying that that refers to “speed of sound” then the sentence would look like this:
“the speed of sound in air is less than that in water” I think it has to be that of sound again as the prepositional phrase cannot be replaced by a “that”

@Sat100 ^^ EXACTLY I remember for that question that “that” and “speed of sound waves in water” were used together, making the phrase REDUNDANT.

I really dont think that the “that” can replace a noun and a prepositional phrase I think it its a pronoun replacing “speed” so you need the “of sound” again.

Can you also give me some previous examples of when collegeboard has tested paralellism and redundancy like this? Usually they repeat the same errors and what you guys r saying is really out of the blue.

anyone remember the essay question about improvement?

I was stuck on the speed of light question for a long time. I initially put D because I thought it was already parallel but changed my mind at the last second.
