SAT Math question:

What is the minimum value of f(x) = abs(x-1) + abs(2x-1) + abs(3x-1) + … + abs(119x-1)?
a.) 49
b.) 50
c.) 51
d.) 52
e.) 53

I can’t figure this one out… it is so frustrating!

It’s 49. I found out by turning it into a sum (http://www2.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP178719d690f62igabh6e00005hfb924d02783ch8?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=3&w=191&h=65</a>)

and then finding the minimum value of it which occurs at x=1/85 and is 49

<a href=“min{sum_(n=1)^119|nx-1|} - Wolfram|Alpha”>min{sum_(n=1)^119|nx-1|} - Wolfram|Alpha;
<a href=“sum_(n=1)^119|nx-1| - Wolfram|Alpha”>sum_(n=1)^119|nx-1| - Wolfram|Alpha;

I know there’s a way to do it on the Ti-89, but I’m not sure about the Ti-84/83.

This question is not likely to appear on the SAT I Math.

Its no calculator question… sorry this is from my math test.

This is an AMC12 question… definitely won’t be on the SAT I, and probably not II.

Yea but I need to know how to do it.

Look at the link, it’s on there.

And you won’t need to do it for any SATs.
