can i still get into caltech if i have gotten a 700 then 710 on SAT math but an 800 on sat II math?

You might, but you would need to have an impressive package to supplement the score. The median SAT I math score tends to be around 800.

but is the 800 on sat II woth anything then?

That shows that you are fine with more advanced high school math… if your SAT II were lower, I’d be REALLY worried.

It doesn’t completely get you out of the woods, but it is a plus.

okay i don’t mean to dwell on this…but do you think missing only 4 questions on the entire math section is that big of a deal if they are trying to judge your maht skills? (missed 4 =710)

it also sucks b/c i know people who missed 4 and recieved 740s b/c of easier curves

I realize it might seem odd, I’m just telling you the patterns I saw in my two years on the committee… anything below 700 would set off alarm bells, and anything close to 700 would also raise eyebrows… Just because it is close to 100 points below our mean.

I understand what you mean about only missing 4, but realize that easier curves happen when the test is on the whole harder (fewer people get high numerical grades) and scores are scaled to be comparable across different administrations.

I would just retake it and do better so you can avoid worrying about it. But if the rest of your application is quite strong, I would say that a 710 won’t keep you from getting in.

The 800 on the SAT II math is the Math level 2, rather than the math level 1, right? If so, you should buy a practice book for the SAT (not a SAT guide, just a book of practice tests) and do the math sections of 3 or 4 of the tests in the week before you take the SAT. It just gives you an idea of what they will ask, because the SAT isn’t real math. The level 2 of the sat II is closer. Doing this with verbal really helped my score (up 90 points).

if you mean run through all math sections, i did that…still didn’t help, though…i just keep making careless mistakes…but i will keep practicing:)
