SAT Maths and Vocab quesiton

hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me with these two SAT questions. The following questions are the ones that I am struggling on.

Maths:

1, -3, 9

In the sequence above, the first term is 1, and every subsequent term is determined by multiplying the previous term by -3. Of the first 100 terms in this sequence, how many are less than 99?

Vocabulary:

Viticulturists attempting to…the spread of the parasitic louse were foiled; whenever they…its growth in one vineyard, it would infest another.

(A) arrest…stemmed
(B) stall…fostered
(C) decimate…forced
(D) protect…denied
(E) cultivate…determined

I think the answer to this question is A or C. Which one is more correct?

Thanks!!

Kelly

the vocab q is (A) because “force its growth” is not similar enough to “decimate the spread.” (And logically, you can’t “decimate” the “spread” of something).

The sequence is 1, -3, 9, -27, 81, -243, …

First note that every other term is negative. So of the first 100 terms, there are 50 negative ones which are of course les than 99. Now just count the positive ones: 1, 9, 81. That gives 3 more. So the answer is 53.
