SAT NOVEMBER 2009, essay prompt?

i had the prompt dealing with whether society benefits when people pursue their own goals. but what was the exact wording of the question? did it say “self-interest” or “pursue their own goals”?

to explain:
i don’t really read the quotes CB provides with the question. people have been telling me that the quote had to do with how SELFISH pursuits might benefit society. the question, to my memory, read something like “can society benefit from individuals who pursue their own goals?”. i used examples to demonstrate how the work of a single person could have reverberating effects on society, NOT how being selfish could help society.

my question is, do i get a zero for not interpreting the question like the quote does?

It was pursue their own goals.

And no, you answer the prompt, not the quote. So you won’t get a 0

@pyroza

do you think i should get a zero for interpreting the prompt as i did?

Did you take a side?

You won’t get a 0 but you also won’t get a 12 if you argued for both sides

No, that’s fine as a response.

US

@187, i effing love you, thanks a lot because i was considering canceling

You never have to read beyond the question/first sentence of the prompt. The quotes are there just to help those who can’t come up with examples. For example, even though I’ve never seen this before, you can incorporate and analyze the quotes into your thesis.
