I took SAT and got a decent score, my counselor is suggesting to also take ACT once as some colleges prefer to see both. Is that true? Should I take ACT also, I was not planning to take it.
If you are happy with your SAT score, no need to take the ACT. I don’t know of any schools that prefer to see both. Did your GC tell you which schools?
A caveat th that could be the scenario in which the cutoff for a scholarship was a little different and one score might qualify you while another might not. Is that a possible situation for you?
I’m not aware of any college that “prefer to see both”.
If you’re satisfied with your SAT score, then you’re done.
If you’re interested, you can take a sample or two of each and see how your scores compare. Some people just perform better on one of the two.
GC told me to take ACT as there are many colleges around east coast which prefer ACT and hence according to her why take chance in case they tick mark both
I second @RichInPitt ‘s comment that some people do better on one or the other. May not hurt to take. You can wait to send scores.
Your GC knows more than I do. But ACT says there are concordance tables generated by ACT and College Bpard that stakeholders can use to compare scores. From this, I would think colleges could make decisions based on either test score.

From the comments, I’m not sure the GC knows more than we do. Having dealt with several, you’d be surprised how ill-informed and under-prepared many of them are.
“tick mark both” makes absolutely no sense at all.
