Um I am new to this site so this might be the wrong place to post this but… I go to a horrible small public school in a rural town that offers no AP or honors courses, I have taken the hardest classes possible, but I have not done fantastic (3.8)… I have some pretty solid SAT scores (low 700’s) and I was wondering if I should take them again to maybe get my scores into the mid 700’s… Would it be worth it and help me get accepted? Or would it be a waste of time… In that case I would take a couple SAT Subject Tests…

Accepted where though?
That’s the question. If you’re planning to go to Harvard… your chances are pretty slim. But retaking the SAT I might be to your advantage because more colleges look at that. The SAT II is rarely required and is unnecessary for most universities.

uchicago
Vanderbilt
Claremont Mckenna
Duke and Dartmouth if I decided to take the SAT IIs

Again, your chances are slim, but definitely retake the SAT I if you want to go for it.

tmat91 you wanna major in Economics?

For what it’s worth, Vandy’s mid 50% math is 680-760, and mid 50% CR is 650-740, so it’s not like you won’t have a shot there. At this point, I guess it’s all about which colleges are you leaning towards.

Also, don’t stress too much about not having APs or Honors; the first thing you’ll hear at ANY college admission meeting is that they consider your transcript in the context of your acadmic environment. So don’t give up hope.

Ya I think I will major in Econ, Poli Sci, or history… And yuechenm, do you really think my chances are “slim”… Because my counselor doesn’t seem to think so… Does anyone else think this? For a more complete look at my profile you can look at my stat profile… Give honest opinions… Thanks

UChicago and Duke are fairly competitive. I know they have like a SAT I Range of generally 2200-2300. If you want to have a better shot at it you should at least try to get a 2250 (note, at least). Because your GPA is a little low, that can be pretty risky also. (3.8 getting accepted is rare)

Vanderbuilt you might have a greater chance, but not much…

I guess my advice would be, definitely retake SAT I and then apply. Hope for the best. Who knows, maybe the admissions officer is feeling good that day. He/she may just accept you.
Good luck!

I see Vanderbilt and CMC recommend at least 2 subject tests:

[Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group)

Consider the recommendation a requirement, especially if your application will not stand out in other ways, and take at least two subject tests in your strongest subjects. The tests are not written at the AP level, so you are probably prepared for them. Consider purchasing the CB’s blue book for the subject tests to get some practice, and be aware of the typical scoring curves on your selected tests (they vary wildly) so you have some sense of how many questions you can leave blank.
Your SAT Reasoning scores are quite workable for most of these schools, but improvement can always help. You might want to consider taking a shot at the December test if you think you can do significantly better.

I know that UChicago is looking for a diverse class. Will I be at an advantage because I live in a very rural part of Washington State?

Is it possible!
the point is, don’t lose hope because you’ve still got a chance. It would be important to submit to a “safe” school though, one that you know will accept you and that you would want to go to.
