SAT Prep

I’m aiming for a 2200+ on my SAT but so far I can only get 1900-2050. I can easily get 700+ in math and writing, but I really struggle in reading. In the critical reading section I only get in the mid 500’s range, or if I’m lucky, somewhere in the 600’s. I really want to improve my critical reading score but I don’t know how. I have a Barron’s Critical Reading book and I’m studying that right now but I don’t feel like I’m improving. In one exercise I got 13/24 correct and that’s really bad. How do I improve my CR score quickly? I’m planning to take the SAT again in January 2010.

Also, I’m planning to take 2 SAT II subject tests in June - Math IIC and Chemistry.
I’m taking PreCalculus H right now and will be learning trigonometry this year. I am a junior in high school. Will it be necessary for me to do any further studying for the Math IIC test?

Also I’m only in regular chemistry at my school and so far we’ve only covered 2 chapters in one marking period - we’re on atoms and atomic theory right now which is in chapter 3. Is the SAT II Chemistry subject test hard and how much will I need to study for it?

I want to get 700+ in both my subject tests. I only got a 550 in my US History subject test which was really disappointing so I want to do better this time. I would really appreciate a guide in the right direction because I want to get into a good college and everything.

Thanks.

You could go on Sparknotes for help with Math II. As far as critical reading goes, that’s more gradual. I would suggest that you start reading more. You could also buy a couple of SAT preperation books. I wouldn’t advise that you spend money on a tutor or program though.

SAT II chem is easier than the AP test certainly but it would have definitely been difficult if I had not taken AP. From the sounds of your chem class pace you will have to do a pretty significant amount of studying for that unfortunately. Math you should be good though.

Critical Reading - ditch Barron’s, get Rocket Review and the Blue Book. Do all the CR sections in the BB.

Math II - yes you will need to do additional studying (apparently you don’t even know basic trig?). Get Barron’s for this.

Chem - depends on where you are by the end of the year. You’re pretty far behind, even for a regular chem class. Get Barron’s and take the test in May or preferably June.
