So the original plan was for my HS junior to take the SAT in March so he’s not overburdened in May/June with APs and SAT IIs - he’s already been tutored for a month - but the tutor says he won’t be ready until June. How can 5 months not be enough to study for this exam? I find this very suprising, especially since most SAT prep courses are the six weeks before the exam.

The progress is depending on the student (effort, ability, and available time). I am sure the tutor want to keep a student longer. If he is doing a full timed practice test every week, I don’t see why he cannot take the first test in December or Jan. Ideally, you want to be done with ACT/SAT1 by April of Junior including retake if necessary and leave April/May/June for AP and subject test preparations. The tutor’s suggested schedule is not very good. Many student would do the retake in Fall of senior year. However, there are several disadvantages with that. First, you may be late for some EA/ED application. Second, you cannot finalize a school list in the Summer with final score for school application and start working on the essays. Third, you may have schedule conflict if you do need to retake a subject test before application deadline. There is nothing wrong to try it once before March (preferably in Dec/Jan that you have sufficient time to improve before next attempt if necessary). Taking the SAT twice or three times (if needed) is not a problem at all. Nevertheless, you should also consider taking ACT in parallel.

If you take the March test can you get your score back in time quickly enough to decide whether to take the June test?

You will get the result back in 3 weeks.
