Because he was ------- in the face of danger, the explorer won the governments highest award for conspicuous bravery.

(A) virile
(B) dauntless
(C) heedless

i think its dauntless (B).

(B) for sure.
I think “conspicuous” means that it’s like “easily visible” (don’t know exact definition). Dauntless pretty much means “fearless”, so that’s a given.

It’s B for sure.

really, I would go for C.

Well heedless means “careless”. I can’t imagine that a government would be awarding prizes for that attribute. Actually I thought governments award prizes to explorers for their discoveries, or for how they managed adversity, so even “dauntless” is dubious. But it certainly is the best choice.

Why the answer is not A? Does “virile” mean “courageous”? I find it in the thesaurus dictionary.

B is the “best” answer.

It’s (B).
(A) “virile” means strong and energetic but connotes sex drive, sexual performance, or ability to sire children
(C) “heedless” means reckless

(B) “dauntless” means unintimidated, courageous, which matches perfectly with the clue (“bravery”)

I got this question correct, but I almost went for virile. My thought process when answering the question:

virile comes from the latin “vir” meaning man, so probably means, “manly or brave.” Dauntless probably means undaunting, or fearless, so that works too. Virile then maybe connotes something a bit different so I went with dauntless.
