SAT Score/Chance Me

Hi,

I am very interested in attending the University of Chicago and my stats are steller but I need advice. I am currently a Junior and taking the SAT before my Junior year ends but I am wondering what should my SAT score range be?

Current Stats

3.85UW (after I finish Junior Year)

4.33W(After Junior Year)

I currently have a job at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida and I am a Team Captain

My EC’s in school are outstanding I hold a couple Presidential roles, others are VP.

My teacher reccomendations will be outstanding.

Class Rank is Top 3% (Total of 866 students graduating with me in 2012)

I have over 150+ Community Service at a renouned hospital in Orlando.

Only thing that I feel that may hurt me in admission is that I have done 0 AP classes but all of my classes are Honors

Year by Year breakdown:

Freshman 4.0UW, 4.5714W

Sophmore 3.5UW 3.787W (Tough year in my life lost my Grandmother, Grandfather and Uncle and very close to all)

Junior (current) 4.0UW and 4.5714W

Also I am a First-Generation College Student (Dont know if it helps)

I am going to apply ED

University of Chicago is my DREAM school, huge Bears and Cubs fan.

I have heard that U of C is a school that is not so numbers oriented like a HYPS.

Also I was wondering would I classify as a URM? I am American Indian and I have checked the collegeboard website and there are not that many American Indians at the U of C it shows on CollegeBoard website that American Indians at U of C are less than 1%.

I am a NEW member on CC. Sorry for the LONG post.

REJECT. UChicago is for Sox fans only xD.

In all seriousness, you look like a solid candidate. Since you’re a junior, have you taken the PSAT? If so, how did you do? You could probably get a sense of how you’ll do on the SAT from that. And of course, know that Chicago does accept ACT as well, so that can always be an alternative.

Otherwise, why weren’t you able to take AP classes? Does your school not offer them for underclassmen (mine did not), or were you locked into a non-AP track? Also, Chicago has Early Action, not Early Decision.

And of course, WHY is Chicago your dream school? Being able to articulate that is crucial.

From your stats, you look like a solid candidate. But remember to really work on your essays as well as SATs.
Of course, a 2300+ SATs is preferable. A 2200+ is still decent though.

If you haven’t taken “the most rigorous courseload” with APs, your shots are dramatically reduced. Take some APs and challenge yourself. I’m also Native American and it helps a lot, but it is not a ticket into the school; it just helps. They only use CR+M for SAT, so aim for 1450 at the minimum, but 1500+ is preferable.

Sorry man…but if you have not been challenging yourself in terms of AP classes and in the context of your high school, then you may be facing a rejection. If, however, your school only offers about one or two AP’s, then I would advise you to take them next year.

That said, if you score 2200+ on the SAT and the breakdown is pretty good, then you have a good chance. If you rock the essays, demonstrate a passion for learning, have challenged yourself in the context of your particular school, and score 2100+ (2200 is safer of course), then with the American Indian status you should have a strong chance.

My only credentials are that I am a EA applicant for the Class of 2015. Good luck.

I have a 2100 score a 4.0 gpa 2 APs and 1 honors class Im applying regular decision to UChicago I’ve also taken Cambridge System Examinations (O levels) 5A*s and 5 As because I used to be in the system before I moved to the US for senior year only
what are my chances???

OP- random question- where do you go to school in Orlando?

Dr. Phillips HS

As for the AP questions their are variety of reasons I could not enroll in AP courses becuase currently I go to Dr. Phillips HS and in 9th grade I went to Edgewater where they did not offer them to Freshman they only offered Honors which I took and I took 5 of them and we are required to have 7 classes a year in Florida and the other 2 were Hope and Spanish 1 which they did not offer Honors. Then for 10th grade I came to Dr. Phillips High School but when I transfered here classes had already been chosen so it became difficult for me to enroll in AP becuase in Florida the state government passed a class size amenmandt stating only 25 kids per class and those spots were already taken. Now I am in 11th grade and my idiotness enrolled in AP classes but the spots in AP classes went to the CIS (kinda like IB but not as hard) kids first which is a magnet program offered here and there were no open spots becuase if they tried to squeeze me into some of the AP classes then my school faces fines from the school district and now I am stuck again 5 honors classes, the non-honors are Web Design and Team Sports. In my school district OCPS we are required to have 8 elective credits to meet graduation requirements and they dont offer AP or Honors in the electives classes offered are like Basketball, Team Sports 1, Team Sports 2, Hope, and Weightlifting, etc…

Thats why I could not enroll in AP’s but I have taken the most rigourous cirriculm that I could possibly take and I would have taken AP’s but due to a variety of reasons as stated above, I was unable to.

Sounds good, communicate that, or have your guidance counselor communicate that, to admissions and you should be able to help your applications. Otherwise, try to get into AP classes senior year if you can. And of course, shift the emphasis on your application away from the in-class performance, which I see you’re already starting to do with your work and volunteer experience. And work hard on writing a knock-out essay!

Oh, I know what CIS is- I’m in it!
Good luck getting guidance to do anything right, they forgot to mail my transcripts on time, so I had to Overnight it…

Yeah, definitely push on your guidance people. I don’t think my transcripts ever got to Harvard or Yale, for better or worse . . .

Yes my Guidance Counselor here is a joke, I have Ms. Searcy and she always gives me this bitter look, and iit is so frustrating when I go to talk to her about my college planning she never elaborates she just gives me bland answers. Our Guidance counselors do suck.

I am a pretty good writer I won Young Writers of America contest and a contest held by my local library.

Also I will emphasize that if it was up to me I would have taken AP classes but it wasn’t and due to poor inadequate funding for our school my state and national government, we were unable to hire additional teachers who could teach these courses, and instead we had to fire teachers to make budget cuts.
