I know the range is from 770-800, but i recieved a 710 on math…wait let me finish…i lost 90 pts for missing 3 questions on a freakin 54 multiple choice test :(

BUT i recieved an 800 on MATH level II

Will this look bad …i know they cant see how many questions missed, but this whole score thing is ridiculous.

Did you get 3 questions wrong? If so, that’s 1.25*3=3.75, or 54-3.75=50.25, which rounds to a raw score of 50. It is certainly not un-normal, according to the CB SAT study guide, to get ~700 with a raw score of 50. Anyway, some tests are harder than others so the test you took could have been relatively easy, and therefore each point would have a greater impact than for a harder test.

Perhaps you, like me, need more practice counting quickly. SAT I math is much different from SAT II math II. If you really believe you have enough experience with math to do well at Caltech, and if your belief is correct, it should not take long to get a good feel for SAT math. I’ve found Barron’s math workbook, and CB’s SAT study guide, useful (you gotta do the practice problems; perhaps one lesson a day). Like you, I scored 800 on the sat II, but I only got 640 on the sat I. (count your blessings) I have had a lot of experience with math already, so I was able to bring my practice test results from ~640 to 700-750. (of course, I won’t know until October’s test whether my own efforts will pay off.)

BTW, remember where you’re posting when you say “the whole score thing is ridiculous.” At least 25% of Techers scored 800 on sat I math. Furthermore, consider this: How many questions could you miss for a 90% - low A - on a 10-question test? Just 1 question. 50 questions, only 5 questions. So, 3 misses becoming a 710 really isn’t that far out (factoring in potential test difficulty), ESPECIALLY if that was 3 wrong (not 3 omit).
